Released back in 1997, coal chamber's debut self-titled album mixes rough chuggy nu-metal riffs with eerie sounding clean chords to create a sound that the band's label described rather embarrassingly at the time as 'spooky-core'. The music is full of typical nu-metal breakdowns and simple repetitive riffs, whilst the vocals, courtesy of one Dez Fafara, ,(now singer for of the equally embarrassing band DevilDriver) are the usual mix of angsty crooning and barked, and in places almost rapped vocals dealing with the usual themes of teenage angst.
