Disadvantages: the best is yet to come for Kanye

College Dropout is the debut album from Kanye West. I got into Kanye from his later work, so came to this knowing how good he was going to get, but how was he to start with?

Kanye took 4 years of recording to make this album, which should have ended up in a quality product right?

Unlike the predominant Hip Hop of the time, Kanye West discarded the gangster image of violence and drugs, and went for a much more diverse content, including religion, family and sexuality. The result is an album that gives you a lot to think about, and this is a lot of the reason why the album went of the massive critical acclaim.

Lyrics-wise, Kanye is a great rapper - the lines are tight and well thought out. Musically, it's much more diverse than other rappers, with a real focus on music rather than just beats. There's guitar, female vocalists and all sorts of other stuff. However, it's still not as musical as his next album 'Late Registration'.

Over-all, this is a very positive album, avoiding aggression, guns and drugs (on the whole), and looking at a range of different issues, which is a breath of fresh air in a genre that usually sticks to those topics. There is still swearing in it, though, so avoid giving it to kids!
