Advantages: Twelve incredibly fine tracks feature here.
Disadvantages: One track from this album is really quite disappointing.
'The Colour and the Shape' is the second Foo Fighters album which was released through Capitol Records in 1997. The album possesses the track 'Monkey Wrench' which seems to be quite a popular one with the vast majority of major fans of the band I've come across in the past; I personally do not derive much enjoyment whatsoever from listening to this one but still find this album to be hugely enjoyable and highly entertaining on the whole. The album contains 13 tracks and this therefore provides for 47 minutes of music.
The album begins well with the track 'Doll', this is a powerful piece of music and then the next track that the band progresses into is 'Monkey Wrench'. 'Monkey Wrench' was actually the first single released from this album, it's the track that I like the least however and first track 'Doll' is I feel a far better piece of music. The track progresses well, the guitars are terrifically well put across in the sound, and the drumbeats also are hugely successful here. The track is brilliant from start to finish, never is there a dull moment with this one and always the music created by the band here is massively impressive. This is an exceptional way to begin the album, it gets the music going on an incredibly positive note indeed and never does the music of the Foo Fighters disappoint here. 'Doll' is one of my personally favourites from this album and every time I hear the track I smile; it's such a powerful piece of music to begin this 'The Colour and the Shape' album with and I for one absolutely love it.
This album possesses such incredibly well put together pieces of music as 'My Poor Brain', 'Everlong', and 'My Hero' also. I think of this bunch it would definitely have to be 'My Poor Brain' that appeals to me most here. The track ranges between supremely quiet and incredibly loud; there are explosions of sound throughout the track and always the music created by the band here is absolutely excellent. I love the way the band vary the sound here, this is something that comes across incredibly well and the chorus is strongly shouted by the bands singer Dave Grohl to great effect here. It's an absolutely brilliant piece of rock music, a fine example of the Foo Fighters sound and in my opinion one of the best tracks that the band has ever written.
'New Way Home' provides this album with a fantastic finale, it's an extremely well put across piece of music from the band and a track that I always thoroughly enjoy listening to. It's one of the lighter offerings from this album, the track progresses pleasantly and never does the bands sound fail to impress me here. Dave Grohl's voice is absolutely phenomenal; really powerfully protruding through in the bands sound and instrumentally the music also has much to offer here. The lyrics are moving, the vocal performance is absolutely stunning, and instrumentally I just can't fault the track. This is not the best track that the Foo Fighters has ever written as a band, it's still pretty impressive however and ends this 'The Colour and the Shape' album extremely well. It's by no means a hard hitting Foo Fighters classic, it's a well chosen track for the final one on the album however and really works well as the closing track here. After a brilliant hard hitting opening in the form of the track 'Doll', the band here saw it fit to signal the end of the album with a more instrumentally/vocally quiet track to really bring the album to an exquisitely fine close. Although it's quite a soft and quiet track however, the album actually ends as it begins; with one final surge of power. 'New Way Home' builds to a crushing final 90 seconds of music, the vocals are shouted out by Dave Grohl and instrumentally also the band just goes a little wild here to provide the album with a bit of a crazy final few second of music. It definitely suits the band to do this and the final track of this album definitely leaves you wanting for more.
Throughout this whole album the music here is incredibly instrumentally hard hitting, it's only 'Monkey Wrench' that I dislike from this album and every other track here impresses me massively so. The vocal performance of Dave Grohl is absolutely phenomenal, the drumbeats are fantastic, and the guitar riffs glide well through the music. The bands sound is simply superb and never is the music created by the band here anything short of exceptional. For the most part the music is hard and heavy, incredibly well put across by the band and always with an infectious supremely sung chorus to boot. The band knows exactly when to provide the album with its softer moments as well though, the Foo Fighters blends brilliantly here soft and gentle sounds with those that are more hard and heavy; the album is incredibly well structured and for me only one of the thirteen tracks present here fails to impress.
'The Colour and the Shape' is most definitely an album that I personally would highly recommend investing in; it's a great album from the Foo Fighters and is I feel the best album that the band has ever released. The track 'Monkey Wrench' is a bit of a failure in my opinion, I know that there are many out there that enjoy it however and I'm sure that for some this album would be seen as a perfect presentation of music from the great American rock band that is the Foo Fighters. There are twelve excellent tracks here, it's not quite perfect due to the blemish of the track 'Monkey Wrench'; the rest of the album is however absolutely exceptional and comes complete with some super guitar work, brilliant drumbeats, and fine bass lines also. I can never fault the vocal tone taken by Dave Grohl here either, the man shows himself to be an incredibly fine performer here and never is the voice of the man anything short of sensational. Definitely invest in this fine 'The Colour and the Shape' album from the Foo Fighters, it's absolutely brilliant and I'm 100% sure that you shall not be disappointed with what you hear.
