The Colour and the Shape

With the imminent release of the Foo Fighters 'Best of' compilation I have started listening to my Foo's albums again to see which songs I think should make the cut. The problem is, they are all so good, I don't see how you can leave any out!
'The Colour and the Shape' is technically the 2nd album from the Foo Fighters, although Dave Grohl plays every note himself on their self-titled debut album.
For this album, Grohl recruited his ex-Nirvana band mate Pat Smear on lead guitar as well as John Taylor Hawkins on Drums and Nate Mendel on Bass.
For a long while this was my favourite album of all time, such is the quality of the tracks. It begins lyrically with 'Doll' and then bursts into the adrenaline fuelled 'Monkey Wrench'. One thing I love about this album is that the songs seem to flow from one to the next. I've seen the Foo's live quite a few times and they often perform songs from this album in 2's or 3's preserving their original order. If you haven't seen them live yet, do it soon, they are truly stupendous!
While this album is primarily a blistering fast paced rock album, there are softer moments; 'February Stars' and 'Walking After You' show off Grohl's songwriting skills in stunning definition.
The song's on 'The Colour and the Shape' seem a bit more polished than the raw, angry collection found on 'Foo Fighters'. I think this album see's Grohl stepping out from under the shadow of his work with Nirvana and creating a sound that is truly his own. Say what you like about Grohl, I don't think anyone can accuse him of trading on his success with Nirvana, or of ripping off their sound. I love both bands but to me they are as different as chalk and cheese and any comparison between them gets a bit tenuous.
So, back to 'The Colour and the Shape'. For me this album is amongst the Foo's best. It is exuberant, energetic and emotive and has stood the test of time to be classed as one of the great albums of all time. High points for me include 'Hey, Johnny Park', 'My Hero' and 'Everlong', but honestly, the whole album is quality. Can you believe it is 12 years since 'The Colour and the Shape' was released? It still sounds as good today as it did in 1997, it is timeless.

Summary: One of the greatest albums of all time
