Advantages: A couple of hits
Disadvantages: The rest of the tunes are just boring
Led by Wes Scantlin, the Post-Grunge band, Puddle Of Mudd dropped their official debut in 2001 with "Come Clean". You have them influenced by the sounds of one of the biggest names in Nu-Metal as Fred Durst is a producer to the release.
1. "Control"
The album is kicked off with what was their debut single, and I have to say that I thought that it was one of the best tunes which you find on the whole thing as you have them going in with lots of energy in it, and this seems to fade as you get further into the record. I believe my liking for it is down to the fact that it is very similar to a later single, but in its won right, it is a good one.
**Four Stars**
2. "Drift & Die"
This was another single from them, but didn't get as much attention as the others which came off the album, and I feel that this was justified as it is clearly the worst of the set, and fits right in with all the samey fillers which you hear in the majority of the album. It just isn't for me, and the tempo bored me.
**Two Stars**
3. "Out Of My Head"
On this one you have the Grunge influence being played up to, and it doesn't really happen all that much on the album, so it is valued for this one as they make sure that the tune stands out on the album. I wouldn't say it is close to the better ones, but it is fair, and shows that they have the potential to do big ones.
**Three Stars**
4. "Nobody Told Me"
This is another deep Grunge tune, and takes on some of the ideal of those who came before them, however I didn't think that this one made as much of an impact in the way it was delivered, and so it just went unnoticed, and is likely to be one you forget.
**Two Stars**
5. "Blurry"
This is the single track which influenced me to find more about the band, and it is perhaps their most well-known recording as you have them doing a highly emotive one which has them focus the tune around the story of the lead singer's heartbreak over having his son taken away from him. I have to say that apart from the powerful chorus, the rest isn't that impressive.
**Four Stars**
6. "She Hates Me"
This is a fun little son by them, and I expect that you will vaguely recognise it, as I did. It is well-done and had them change the whole way they go about doing things as you hear Wes finally come to the conclusion that the girl who he has been after actually hates him.
**Four Stars*
7. "Bring Me Down"
After hearing the tune which we just received, it changes the whole feel of the music, and it opens up something which wasn't apparent before as it makes them sound a lot more Pop-based, and this tune has them playing up to this even more, and it decreases the quality of the whole recording for this reason.
**One Star**
8. "Never Change"
On this one, you hear the addition of other genre on top of the Alternative style which they come with, however in this case it simply confuses things as it doesn't come across that they know what they are doing with it, and it all falls apart at certain places in it. With them classified as 'alt', with Post-Grunge named as something they are similar too, it gives them freedom, but they don't really use it.
**Two Stars**
9. "Basement"
On this one you have them bringing the energy levels up, and it makes a big change to things as without such a lift, this is a very boring album, and so this is highly-valued, and has them come with something a little different in order to break the monotony of it all. I wouldn't say it is all that good, but it improves the general sound of it all.
**Two Stars**
10. "Said"
As this one begins you know that you are in for a very different recording from them as yu have them experimenting a lot more with what they have, and coming up with a much more exciting arrangement. They drop into some Grungy sounds, and it really makes it sound a lot better than it had been over the past few tunes as they finally have direction in the music.
**Four Stars**
11. "Piss It All Away"
To end the album off, you have a tune which is characteristically them, however it would appear that I don't really enough what they do, and apart from the singles that they came with, I don't really feel what they do, but I'm sure that others would as they come with a clear Post-Grunge style of performing.
**Two Stars**
I wouldn't recommend this album unless you actually liked all four of the singles as they pretty much give the whole spectrum of recordings which you will find on the album. Most of the tunes sound like "Drift & Die", and I would say that this brings it down, but there is the odd big tune on "Come Clean".

- 16/04/09 I have this album and agree, there are some very good songs but also many forgettable ones - but then, I guess that's true of all too many albums. I love 'She Hates Me', though! |
