It’s February already, but the number of album’s I’ve bought this year equals the number of brain cells that Prince William possess (i.e. one). The album in question is obviously this one, or else I wouldn’t be reviewing it would I. My music reviews have become a bit formulaic of late, so methinks I’ll tinker around with the format on this one, just for the craic. HISTORICAL CONTEXT The Chemical Brothers (Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) are, to quote Hey Boy Hey Girl, superstar DJs. They’ve been together since studying Medieval History at university (a subject I study too, but that’s not really relevant, is it?). ... Read the complete review

Did you rock out to the drum and bass machine of "Block Rockin' Beats"? Did you dance yourself silly when "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" came on in the club? Or were you induced to a state of semi-conscious bliss by "Setting Son"? If you were, get ready to experience more of the same. Just don't expect the train to shy away from the tracks. Arriving on the arpeggio string arrangement of the title track, you could be forgiven for thinking for an instant that with "Come With Us", the Chemicals have followed Daft Punk into accessible pop territory. However, things move on into familiar territory and the sound seamingly ... Read the complete review

This can hardly be called a comeback (they never left) or a return to the underground (they're almost garanteed a top 10 placing). However Tom and Ed returned with a tighter, more dancefloor orrientated album. Prehaps because they had disappointed critics and fans with Surrender, that there were fewer rock star collaborations (only two, kept for the end) and a massive lead track "It Began in Afrika" which had been available a year earlier on white label, giving crucial DJ ground support. You get a sense from the vocal sample on the opener ("behold...they're coming back"), that Tom and Ed knew the importance of this album, ... Read the complete review

Yes, The Chemical brothers have done it again. If you liked 'Surrender', you'll love this. The latest offering from the Brothers is phenomenal! 10 tracks to blow your mind. On this one, they have collaborated with Richard Ashcroft to explore new levels of vocal music. They take you on a journey that you've never experienced before. How did I listen to albums before this??? They can offer anything from synthesisers right through to some wicked guitar and bass playing. The tow singles that are most known are 'Star Guitar' and 'It began in Afrika'. If you know these tunes, you'll know that they are different in their own rights. ... Read the complete review

The Shadow's Madame - Cadaveria
Frank Booth's catchy guitars keep things entertaining.
Cadaveria's vocals aren't exactly phenomenal.
Seventh Coming - Cathedral
More accessible.
Repetitive.
Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious - Carcass
Perfect fusion of Carcass' two eras, with excellent and ferocious musicianship.
Longer songs may deter some.
My Passion Your Pain - Callenish Circle
Reminds you how good Dark Tranquillity used to be.
Dark Tranquillity are still doing an adequate job of that without these guys' help.
Memphis May Fire - Memphis May Fire
Some decent Post-Hardcore music with elements of rock thrown in for good measure.
Quite generic in sound, provides nothing particularly new to offer to the genre.
Heartwork - Carcass
Pioneering work of melodic death metal.
Disappointingly commercial after previous efforts.
Graceful...yet Forbidding - Callenish Circle
Excellent guitar performance.
Otherwise standard melodic death metal fare.
Far Away From Conformity - Cadaveria
Cadaveria can sing!
Frank Booth has run out of ideas.
King Of The Grey Islands - Candlemass
Still on top form, the band's finest album since the eighties.
Prevalence of filler material.
Candlemass - Candlemass
Reunion and return to form.
Tries too hard to please the fans.
