... even better, it's released on Open Grave Records, which is the best name for a record label I've ever come across. As old-style grindcore that was so prevalent in the early nineties, the sound here is fairly simplistic and riff-oriented, with Rich Flint's growls fitting perfectly into the overall dingy and gritty sound rather than yelling above it like more traditional death metal. The emphasis here isn't on technical skill, but the riffs are mostly memorable and inventive, and especially considering it's a grindcore a...more

'Contaminated' is the first release from Connecticut death/grind band Atrocity for fifteen years, following a recent reform of the original line-up, but rather than newly recorded material it's disappointingly only a collection of songs from the early albums, recorded in these slightly different forms back in the early nineties. Once you get past this disillusion, and the fact that it would make more sense to track down the original full-lengths 'Infected' and 'The Art of Death' (conveniently repackaged together in 2001), it's easy to appreciate these songs for what they are - and even better, it's released on Open Grave Records, which is the best name for a record label ...  Read the complete review

Tomb Of The Mutilated - Cannibal Corpse
Archetypal death metal. Attempts to shock are pretty desperate at times.

Testify For My Victims - Carnal Forge
Improved vocals. Outside of cheap gimmicks and different lyrics, all songs are the same.

Symphonies Of Sickness - Carcass
Greater musical skill, more satisfying songs. May disappoint grindcore purists.

Isolate - Circus Maximus
Keeping the classic prog metal spirit alive through imitation. Focus on commercial ballads is disappointing.

Gore Obssessed - Cannibal Corpse
They haven't become a nu-metal band, at least. More of the same, worse than usual.

Fractured - Capharnaum
Some great guitar work. Nothing particularly interesting here.

Eaten Back To Life - Cannibal Corpse
Enjoyable slice of early death metal, without over-reliance on shock value. Uninspired.

Heavy Metal: The Score - Elmer Bernstein
A great, long sought-after Bernstein treasure Really, there are none. This is a deserved release

Hammer Smashed Face - Cannibal Corpse
Cannibal Corpse's good song, and some okay covers. Unremarkable performance.

Butchered At Birth - Cannibal Corpse
Ha ha, it's horrible. Poor performance spoiled even further by terrible production.
