The Descendents formed way back in 1978, as a Surf-Punk band in Hermosa Beach, California. It was not until 1982 that they would release their first ever album; 'Milo Goes To College' through New Alliance Records, an album which is still held in high regard today. The Descendents have always made extremely fine music and of course this album is no exception - catchy Punk Rock anthems make this band special and that's why I personally will always hold a special place in my heart for them. Seriously, this band are at the top of their game with what they do and because of this very fact, every release with them is really something very special. In my opinion, the band have never recorded a bad album yet in the six that they have released over the years.
With the album 'Cool To Be You' we see the band crack out 14 more smashing Punk Rock anthems which are sure to put smiles on the faces of Punks across the world. The spectacle toting front man Milo Aukerman is idolised the world over for his awesome, unique vocal styling, and it really does bring great enjoyment to me to hear that he is still firing out the same fantastic vocals after so many years in the business. There are some exceptional tracks on this album, ones which will make you smile and surely sing along. 'Blast Off' stands out to me in particular on this album as it is just one of those cracking anthems that over the years we have come to associate with and expect of this band. It has great pace, superb lyrics, ultimate catchiness, and just really is an all time classic from the band. On this track we see the band putting down some amazing bass lines, riveting guitar riffs, exciting drumbeats, and Milo's vocals are just absolutely spot on. Milo kicks the lyrics out perfectly on this track with his supremely charming style. This song has some great bite, some super rhyme, and just seems to be one of those tracks that will be pumping out of sound systems for many a year to come.
Another stand out track on this album is title track, 'Cool To Be You.' This is another amazingly stylish track and has the unique sound of Milo, mixed with some terrific bass lines, guitar riffs to die for, and drumming so fast and strong that your foot will be slamming away like mad and you just wont be able to control it! I really do love this track and feel that it is definitely one of the highlights of the album - it really does stand out, which is quite bizarre considering that this is such a perfect album. You would have thought that given the immense quality of this album, no tracks in particular would stand out, but ultimately there are still some that carry so much weight that you just cant help but notice them. When a tune stands out so vastly on an album of such high quality, you know that it must be something really rather special
'Merican' is another of these tracks that looms large when listening to 'Cool To Be You' - it is an incredible tune that is sure to get the juices flowing. This track just has so much pace - I swear, it is absolutely impossible to dislike this track, its just so amazing and unbelievably close to perfect. I can't believe that the band have managed to do it once again, they really have created another album which is almost entirely flawless. I really do not know how they manage to do this time after time but still, you won't see me complaining. Milo et al really have some special chemistry going on and this is what makes their music so special. The 4 musicians work perfectly together and as a result, at the end of each album there are always a great deal of positives to draw from their music.
If you have ever listened to and liked the band then there is no reason why you wont like this release as it is absolutely amazing. Descendents have been going as a band on and off for thirty years now, yet still they continue to release some great music of exceptional proportions. Every time the band go on a hiatus, it is ultimately an extremely sad occasion, but thus far they've never left us disappointed as they've always gone on to reform. This time round, the band have been active since 2002 and I just hope that they are here to stay as who knows - next time they have a 'hiatus' it may well mark the end of the Descendents. Check out this album if you can, you'll surely not be disappointed.
