      Amazing album

To the newcomer this album may sound very meaty - the duo L'Ham de Foc (Fishhook of Fire) with their album Cor de Porc (Pig Heart) are an awesome representation of medieval music. Singing in Catalan, the duo are folk/roots musicians from the Valencia region and have mastered a medieval type of music from their region with similarities to flamenco, they don't just play this though with an array of guesting musicians and an arsenal of instruments (some of which are pretty unknown and look alien to the eye) at hand they branch out into North African music, Greek, Turkish, Eastern European, Caucususian (if there is such a word?) and Central Asian.

Whilst the album doesn't quite encapture a live performance of the band (after all they are usually very interestingly clothed) - it's as good a medieval album as you are likely to come across.

The rythms are hypnotic but often quite energetic too. I personally don't speak any Catalan but the lyrics supposedly cover subjects favoured amongst medieval musicians such as love, battle, loss and nature and it's fairly easy to tell which is which due to the emotion put into the vocals from the extremely talented vocalist Mara Aranda. Efren Lopez's instrumental work is outstanding though, his flexibility on different instruments is amazing and the album follows in suit - it's as easy to dance to as it is to have as relaxing background music. I've not heard much from their other albums other than the occasional youtube performance but word has it that this is the best one so far anyway. This album is well worth its price, if you like folk music then you will get weeks of entertainment out of this one and are likely to discover something new each time you listen. It may be tricky to find in the shops but a quick google will lead you to numerous online shops selling the album.
