Clock Without Hands - Nanci Griffith

Rating:
www.mag.org.uk As Nanci would say, "Thank you kindly." ~~ I have never seen her cast a spell, but Nanci Griffith works some special kind of magic that easily opens even the most cynical of ears, eyes, hearts and souls… I’ve said elsewhere, and truly believe, that she is a force for good – so here I go again, spreading the word… “Clock Without Hands” was released on Monday, 30 July 2001, so naturally I needed it THAT DAY and, come lunch break, hopped a London Routemaster Bus, heading for HMV in Oxford Street… I was not surprised to hear the album playing as I walked in. More magic… ...

From A Distance: The Very Best Of Nanci Griffith - Nanci Gri ...

Even if you think you don't know any Nanci Griffiths songs, I guarantee you'll recognize some of these. "Trouble in the fields" has been covered by countless Irish singers (check out the "A Woman's heart" compilations), but it was actually written by Griffiths, who is Texan. It's a very moving account of hardship in the farming community, but still seems relevant to today. I love the song "From a distance", and I especially like Griffith's version of the Julie Gold song. She really puts across its bitter irony (God is watching us but ONLY from a distance, and so doesn't really see anything) - when I hear Cliff ...

Other Voices Other Rooms - Nanci Griffith

Rating:
Nanci Griffiths clearly doesn't mind letting other people taking the limelight (or the royalties) on her albums. This CD not only consists of none of her own songs, it also features contributions from many heavyweights of folk and country, including Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, the Indigo Girls. It's really more of a 'project' than a Griffiths CD. The songs are performed using acoustic instruments, and there's almost a reverence in the way they are performed, with respect and purity of sound. It comes accross as a labour of love - but this doesn't make it introspective or hard to listen to, as some musicians' 'pet' ...
