Advantages: A couple of good tracks

Disadvantages: Just doesn't work out of the film

When Coyote Ugly was first released, I, like most men I'm sure, fought back an urge to watch it, dismissing it instantly as pure chick flick with music material. But, sure enough, I succumbed, watched it, and strangely enjoyed it.

One of the catchy things about the film was the music. I noticed that there seemed to be quite a bit of LeAnn Rimes in the film and, sure enough, the soundtrack starts off with four songs from her. Can't Fight The Moonlight takes pride of place at the start of the film, it being the main song that Piper Perabo's character Jersey performs in the film. It is a rousing song indeed. The next couple of songs from Rimes are decent, but don't really do much for me, and the same goes for Don Henley's All She Wants To Do Is Dance.

Perhaps it's the moments in the film that signify whether I enjoy the track or not, and no doubt some of these songs may be better in my mind if I associated them with something other than the film. However, as this is the association I place them with, it's not until EMF's Unbelievable (track 6) that I get as good a vibe as I did with Moonlight, the first track.

INXS' Need You Tonight is an excellent track on its own, and serves it's purpose very well here on the soundtrack and in the film. The Charlie Daniels Band's The Devil Went Down To Georgia is a very upbeat although surprisingly soothing track for me (in a strange Guitar Hero kind of way!) and one I enjoy listening to, while the final trio of songs are rather average once more.

I suppose it does boil down to having music that fits what you're aiming for. The songs do fit in quite well with the film, it has to be said, and hearing snippets of them throughout the movie itself was actually enjoyable. Curiously, this doesn't transfer onto CD when listening to the entirety of the tracks without any film accompaniment, and this is a disappointment indeed. I felt that the majority of the tracks on here are probably decent enough, but as they reminded me of certain parts of the film, I coulsn't enjoy them as much as I had hoped.

I find it hard to shake this feeling with these songs. I still enjoy the film, and still enjoy the music when it plays on there. I just can't listen to the soundtrack and enjoy it as much as I possibly should. As a result, I can't give this soundtrack a particularly high rating, although there are a few quality tracks and the music itself is fundamentally sound, especially when you apply it in the context of the film. While it feels appropriate in the film, as a soundtrack on CD format, the combination just doesn't seem to work.

Summary: Sadly doesn't have the same effect as in the film

Nice read. Not sure I ever considered "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" as soothing, mind you - LOL!
