really are the pioneers of some of today’s music, and that their lead singer was called Phil Oakey. I don’t doubt that there are people out there who afford The Human League the same amount of credibility that I used to give them, and if you too think there’s no more to this band than cheesy 80’s pop, then I recommend you pick up a copy of Dare! without delay. Kicking off with a robotic drum beat, provided by the band’s trademark Linn Drum Computer, and a series of whistles, whirrs, and delicately crunchy noises, the album opens with life affirming ‘The things that dreams are made of’ ...

The Human League`s lack of success with later albums is all relative to this masterpiece from 1981. It is a colourful collection of analogue synthesizer sounds from the days before digital sounds were truly exploited. But don`t let this put you off. Most of the tracks are cheerful tunes that you will be singing along with for quite a while. The Very Best of The Human League . This compilation of HL tunes was released in 2003 and if you do want to buy it after this review, my advice is iTunes, all 28 songs for £7.99. To buy in most shops as a double CD is still more than £10, and the price (and availability) varies greatly online. To be honest, when I was compiling an 80 s playlist for my iPod I needed about 6 songs from HL but could not resist downloading the lot for the price.
