      The Crown's third album (2002).

The Crown's third album starts out as a promising fusion of extreme death metal and melodic elements with the excellent title track before slipping into a predictable and lifeless pattern thereafter. I expected more from what is, in some ways, an off-shoot of the legendary melodic death metal band At the Gates, featuring the vocal talents of hatemonger extraordinaire Tomas Lindberg, while the band's links with the Haunted (another sort-of At the Gates spin-off) added further intrigue, even though that band has never impressed me too much. Unfortunately, the result isn't that much different from the rest of the Swedish death metal scene, merely faster and angrier.

'Crowned in Terror' really is the only song worth listening to here for death metal fans, impressing with a phenomenally fast and brutal performance that subsequently loses all of its power and becomes run-of-the-mill, and featuring some memorable and catchy lead guitar melodies, but anyone who is able to sit through to the lacklustre finale 'Death Metal Holocaust' has something of the masochist about them. I haven't heard the Crown's other works, but one mediocre album is enough.
