Advantages: Brilliant collection of songs

Disadvantages: some filler

Cruel Intentions has become, without a doubt, one of the most watched films amongst me and my friends. And it's not just the wickedness portrayed by the fantastic Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar, but undoubtedly also it's fine, fine soundtrack.

Althought film sountrcaks do have a bit of a rep for being boring and containing obscure little strange songs from the film, here's a reality check. This soundtrack, featuring big names like Blur, Placebo, Faithless, The Verve and Fatboy Slim dotted amongst slightly lesser known names like Marcy Playground, is dark, anthemic and truly evil, exactly like the film itself.

Starting out with a bang is the insane "every you every me" by Placebo, setting the tone for the rest of the album more than the upbeat "praise you' from fatboy slim. Blur's "Coffee and TV" trundles along sweetly as ever, followed by the very sexy "Bedroom Dancing" by Day One.

The next song deserves a whole paragraph to itself- the heartbreaking stripped down simple song that is "Colorblind" by the Counting Crows. The simple piano backing and dreamy vocals make this song truly special, a new ultimatum for a new generation of love songs.

Harder and darker is "comin' up from behind" by Marcy Playground- not a song you'd like to hear while going down a dark alley, late at night. Skunk anansie's secretly is a bit high pitched and whiny but perfectly listenable. "This love" by Craig Armstrong is another soft slushy one, floaty and mellow, drifting over the top of everything else. And then you drift along until........

You hear those well known strings, lifting themselves high above everything, taking you back to the very moment of the final revenge, of a black antique car riding off into the sunset- The Verve's "Bittersweet symphony"- the song which has become such a modern anthem for a whole generat
ion. And what a great choice of song indeed.

If you enjoyed the movie, then this album is truly essential. If you haven't seen the movie yet, it's still a brilliant collection of fantastic songs.

Thought it was an excellent film and that Bittersweet Symphony a great choice for the closing track. Great review.
