EMINEM - Curtain Call. And so for his 5th mainstream album we are given a selection of slim shadys greatest hits from classics like My Name is and Guilty Conscience up to the more recent and brilliant When im Gone. So how does it fair up....
As with previous albums we are treated to a rather amusing intro, showing that EMINEM hasnt lost his humerous side just yet. Things are looking good at this point, a familiar start to therefore what should be a great album.. and it is, with the exception of track number 2. FACK! I honestly have no idea what he was thinking when he produced and wrote this crap but it has to be his worst song to date. It is an explicit and vulgar attempt to make the subject of sex humerous.. and in someways it does. However compared to the lyrical genius and style of tracks like Lose yourself, Like Toy Soldiers etc its is simply awful. This album is meant to represent EMINEMS greatest hits...so wt the hell is this rubbish doing there. One thing is for certain though, dnt play this track in front of the young ones, or older generation for that matter.
The other new track to make an appearance is Shake That ft Nate Dogg. Again this is not up to the same high standard as other tracks which feature on the album, but it does come across as a good general party song and is a welcome change in comparison to the other deeper more emotional tracks.
Moving on from FACK and Shake That the album really begins to shine, the inspirational stan is one of the highlights, especially the special bonus track with the live performace including Elton John. Mockingbird also makes the cut, EMINEMS attempt at declaring his love for his daughter Halie in an emotional and moving track. Just lose it, though not quite a lyrical masterpiece, also features and does help to lighten the mood of the album and overall is generally a good hit...even if it was just because of the video :D. Other hits such as Sing for the Moment, The Real Slim Shady, Like Toy soldiers, Lose Yourself cant be beat and really show EMINEMS unique style which has made him such an iconic figure in the Hip/hop Community.
EMINEMs latest and final single When Im Gone in my opinion is one of his best tracks to date, and definitely finishes off the album with a bang. It really gives you an insight into his life, family and the reasons why he wants his career to end......all though this aint the case no more: EMINEM Presents The RE UP - December 5 2006
The artwork and sleeve insert is well produced and depicts a variety of images relating to EMINEMs career. The main front image is visually striking and really draws your attention to what is an outstanding album. Sadly the insert itself does not contain the entire lyircs however does provide all the usual track details you would expect.
Obviously being hip/hop and EMINEM the usual explicit language can be expected, however dont let this put you off. If you dont have any of his other albums then this is your best chance to sample the lyrics that made him one of the biggest selling rap artists of all time. And if you do own all his previous albums, you will buy it anyway :D
Curtain Call is available from all major music retailers as well as online for an aproximate price of £7.99. There is also a special edition available which includes Stans Mixtape - A small collection of EMINEMs personal favourite tracks, including some by D12 for £12.99
Despite FACK this is an essential purchase for any Hip/Hop fan or simply anyone with a good taste in music. The curtain maybe closing.... but his music lives on. (RIP PROOF)
