Advantages: rap talent

Disadvantages: rude

First off a disclaimer: I am embarking on writing a series of Hip-Hop reviews, but I am not an expert on the genre. I enjoy it as a fan, but don't know everything about it like some of the excellent reviewers on here such as XICripZ. My reviews will be in the style of 'Hip-Hop for Dummies', and won't go into any background I know nothing about. I will simply describe the music, the sound and the lyrics, giving a short and succinct over-view of the album to newcomers like me!

Eminem's 'Curtain Call' is a best-of album that came out in 2005. By this point, Eminem was super famous as the face of rap, and this album showcases the best of his work, along with some other more bizarre tracks.

Musically, the tracks are fairly simple. There isn't a huge emphasis on musicality or overpowering tunes, with the power coming from the lyrics themselves. Notable exceptions include 'Stan', which is worked around a song by Dido.

Lyrics-wise, Eminem shines. His rhymes are phenomenal, with not just rhyming couplets, but around 6 or 8 rhymes for every single word. That means that the music has a flow to it that is unprecedented in hip-hop.

Content-wise, the raps are a mix of out and out violence and aggression, with the Slim Shady monicker covering content that includes rape and murder. In stark contrast to this, there are also 'funny' tracks, where the content is comical and silly. It's a real juxtaposition of styles, and it works well on the album.

Around half the tracks are well-known famous ones, and the other half will only be known if you've owned previous albums.

All in all, a great album that will bring you up to date with the best of Eminem up to 2005 which can be picked up for just £3.99 from play.com. After this, there's the new album Relapse to pick up!
