Day and age is the third album by American band The Killers and was released in 2008. The band are from Vegas and there first two albums were amongst the best received in the early years of the millennium; in this album they in my opinion released one of the best albums of the 2000's. The album has echoes of glam, majesty and retro shades. The most commercial song of the album "Human" is a typical example of the quality of the writing and themes, on the surface a fairly predictable pop song about music and dance however hides a more perverse message over what it is to be young and free.
This is a subtle album surrounded by pumping guitars, drums and a high speed retro soundtrack, there are high speed ballads such as Human or funky almost jazz like songs like Spaceman. However, my favourite song on the whole album is a slow burning song called A Dustland Fairytale, it has the most haunting background heavy on piano, almost nothing else except Brandon Flowers vocals before kicking into a crescendo of violence and fighting over nothing more than a girl in a dress and a boy in jeans.
There is enough in this album to satisfy any fan of progressive rock, plenty of heavy guitars strong vocals and anthems for singing in a bar or the bath. The Killers built on their huge successes with another superb album and cemented there place as one of the bands on the 2000's.
When American band "The Killers" first burst on to the scene in the UK with the album "Hot Fuss" I was instantly a fan and immediately fell in love with both the band and the album. This love affair saw me snapping up both "Sam's Town" and "Sawdust" and whilst neither hit the heady heights of the bands first album they were both solid album which were generally more good than bad.
Whilst it's true none of their albums were amazing they had enough fantastic songs on each of them to make it worthy of listening to the weaker tracks. In fact I think had I not enjoyed "Hot Fuss" as much as I had I'd probably have loved "Sam's Town" as I think "Hot Fuss" got my expectations up too highly.
For Christmas way back in 2008 my mother decided to buy me "The Killers" then new album "Day and Age". I'd managed to listen to it a few times and whilst I wasn't a big fan I never actually got around to really giving it a good listen. Sadly before I got around to sitting down and writing about it my brother had ran off with the album and I never saw it again...that was until I recently discovered Spotify and, after some 3+ years I finally got around to giving the album another listen.
The album opens with the track "Losing Touch" a track that whilst sounding like "The Killers" earlier work sounds like a typical Killers filler track. It doesn't have the charged energy or the catchy feeling of the previous opening tracks (such as "Tranquilize", "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" or "Sam's Town") and it comes off as a really under-stated opener. For me this is the worst way an album can start as I feel it needs to grab me from the opening.
After the poor start to the album things do begin to pick up with the album's first single "Human". This is much more like a Killers song with a catchy beat, catchy lyrics and an injection of energy. Don't get me wrong this isn't a great song and it's certainly not one of the best Killers tracks but it's much better than the opener, despite having the stupid "Are we Human? Or are we dancer?" line. It's an acceptable song due to the catchiness even if it lacks an coherence to it lyrically.
The album's third track "Spaceman" is the second single from the album and it's finally a solid track which really feels like a Killers song with decent lyrics, the fantastic catchiness and up tempo beat that made the Killers such an enjoyable band to listen to. Whilst again it's not one of their greatest tracks it's another step in the right direction as the album seems to get better. Sadly however the album swiftly goes down hill with several unmemorable tracks following it up.
Tracks like "Joyride", "A Dustland Fairytale", "This is Your Life" and "I Can't Stay" are hardly worth talking about, such is the disappointment I felt whilst listening to them. They felt like pure filler tracks, and that's despite "A Dustland Fairytale" being released as a single (it peaked at #137 in the UK). I know that albums have filler songs here and there but this was the entire middle of the album that seemed to bore the pants off me.
By track 8, "Neon Tiger" I was tempted to turn the album off though kept it on and felt a little bit relieved by the fact the track sounded a little bit like The Killers of old, though sadly, aside from the chorus, it lacked any magic of The Killers at their best. It was a "nice" song but again didn't grab my attention until very late when they seemed to turn up the sound in an attempt to wake up the listeners (presumably realising that they were sending their listeners to sleep).
Thankfully "The World We Live In" (track 9) grabbed my attention quickly, the first track to do so since "Spaceman" (track 3) and whilst it's not really what I imagine from The Killers it was perfectly enjoyable and little wonder that it was released as a single (even though it didn't do very well). It seemed that whilst the track was decent enough, it could have done with a shot of caffeine just to add some extra life to it as it does seem a bit too slow and passive for me to really love, though it's decent enough (especially considering what had come before it).
Just as it seems like the album could save itself, we get "Goodnight, Travel Well" a track so slow, so tedious and so over-drawn that it seems to just build up to nothing. It's as if the band wanted to tease a great song but over-teased and sort of...erm failed to shoot their load at all.
Bizarrely track 11 "A Crippling Blow" (a bonus track on many versions of the album) is actually better than a vast majority of the other tracks, in fact...it's actually really good. Sadly however after around 40 minutes it's not worth the pay off for the track and whilst it's an enjoyable track it's one of those cases where you'd be better off just buying the track rather than the whole album.
The final track on this version of the album is "Forget About What I Said" and much like "A Crippling Blow" the track is really good and is much more like The Killers that I fell in love with. The track is energetic, catchy and will have you singing along to it, just like the best tracks on the album. Quite what they were doing putting this on as a "bonus" rather than a main album track is a real mystery.
This is a strange album to really summarise. Despite a poor opening track the album seems to get going through tracks 2 and 3 before dying in the middle until very late on where it begins to pick up again before suddenly falling apart once again on track 10. Oddly the bonus tracks almost manage to save the album, and in fact had they been in the belly of the album they may well have done enough to just make the album worth buying, instead however I'd have to advise just buying the few worth while tracks ("Spaceman", "Human", "The World We Live In", "A Crippling Blow" and "Forget About What I Said") as MP3's and saving yourself a few quid.
If you're a hardcore fan of The Killers by all means give the album a listen but you will be very disappointed by the lack of energy and charm of the album has. I'm starting to think my brother actually did me a favour by stealing it from me all those years back.
Day & Age is the third studio album from The Killers (fourth if you count B-side collection Sawdust) and their most recent effort, released in 2008. As an album, it seems to mix the claustrophobic indie rock of debut Hot Fuss with the American-style rock of Sam's Town, with added touches of dance and pop.
This album has spawned two particularly good singles: Human, a dance-rock song, if there is such a thing, and Spaceman, an indie rock anthem that is about what the title suggests. Two songs on the album are particularly outstanding: the all-American epic ballad of the deserts, A Dustland Fairytale, with lyrics about princesses and kingdoms, and Goodnight, Travel Well, an epic solemn farewell anthem.
Opening track Losing Touch has an appropriate indie melancholy, while This Is Your Life and I Can't Stay are guitar-laden indie songs worthy of Hot Fuss. Throughout there is the same 80s synth that carried their debut, though this complements the kind of songs you can listen to in wide open spaces, rather than the hot sweaty clubs brought to mind by tracks like Mr. Brightside.
Closing bonus track A Crippling Blow is, despite the name, jaunty and upbeat, though I can't help thinking it should have been placed earlier in the album, allowing Goodnight, Travel Well to be a fitting grand finale.

I still think Hot Fuss is the best Killers album, but Day & Age is a pretty good effort and deserves marks for being a progression in their musical sound. There are enough good songs on here to make the album worth buying and to make me look forward to their next.
Day & Age is the fourth album (if you count Sawdust, which is a compilation album) from the Killers, an American band originating from Las Vegas, Nevada. Day & Age was released in 2008, with hit song 'Human' being the first released single from the album.
This album is slightly different from the other albums and I think I preferred the older ones. The overall theme for this album seems quite cheesy to me. With some of the songs crating an image in my head of lying on a Hawaiian beach - that was my first impression, but as I listen to it now I might have jumped to conclusions.

Crazy tune at the beginning and end, which reminds me of PS3 game Little Big Planet. Not too keen on this.

Not much to say about this song, although it does make me think of cowboys riding through a wild-western scene on horses.

This seems to have a hint of American country music theme to it, one of the poorer songs.

The Killers have certainly outdone themselves over the years. From their humble origins in Vegas to headlining in major festivals such as T in the Park (I was there, they were very good!) and becoming one of the biggest bands in the world today.
Their albums and musical styles so far have varied dramatically. Starting with the electro-rock of Hot Fuss and moving to the Springsteenian guitar riffs of Sam's Town (When We Were Young is the best example of this), this album is the latest in the bands evolution.
And again, they've gone into a different drive. Day and Age is like a strange and alien landscape, populated by Spacemen, Storm-makers, and Joy-rides.
Songs in this album are emotive, jumpy and so full of energy that just listening to them makes you want to get up and dance. I am, of course, talking of the likes of Human, Spaceman and Crippling Blow.
Others show a sense of melanchony and strange saddened beauty that were not seen in the Killers before. The epic Dustland Fairytale ("And the decades disapear like sinking ships but we persevere" and "Out where the dreams all hide, out where the wind dont blow/ Out here the good girls die, and the sky wont snow") has some of the best, saddest and most heart- wrenching lyrics ever written, coupled with the thumping baselines and guitars, reminants of Sam's Town.
However, there are also plenty of fillers and hastily written songs, of which there is little to say or talk about.
But overall, this is an amazing album, the best songs are REALLY good, the worst aren't that bad either. I would definately advise getting this album.
Day and Age is The Killers fourth album, and in my opinion, ranks a very respectable second place to their electric debut, Hot Fuss.
The general feel of the album is more spacey than their other albums. By this, I mean that the airy background noises, echoes, and soft crashing cymbals that are reiterated throughout the music, along with the mosaic desert/night sky cover and single title Spaceman create a thematic reference to mystery and the universe.
1. "Losing Touch" 6/10
The opening track begins with resounding wind chime like bells, a great crescendo and a quite funky brass section. Lots of waves-crashing cymbals, and a meaty guitar solo worthy of The Darkness to finish! (I mean this in a good way). A good opening track.
2. "Human" 8/10
The first single released from the album, provoking much debate over the lyric of dancer/denser.
(I am a proponent of the latter interpretation, which actually makes SENSE, and was infuriated to find a radio 1 guest expert criticising the lyric - I think that The Killers other work shows that they are smart enough to not follow the plural Human by the singular Dancer, but there you go!)
An awesome song, some big George of the jungle style beating drums, eerie synths, and that little repeating bass line which sounds like a little alien riding a horse. Flower's vocals sound most raw and innocent on this track. Good strong lyrics as always, a brilliant track.
3. "Spaceman" 9/10
My favourite of the singles. For a song about alien abduction, it is unusual in holding together as tongue in cheek, fantastical and meaningful all at once: the lyrics express simply and subtly the idea of paranoia, human worry and its perspective within the scheme of things - very insightful. You've probably heard it, so I won't bother describing the music as your ears can do a better job than my words.
4. "Joy Ride" 7/10
A funky, jungly edge on their usual rock sound, this is one of my boyfriend's favourites. There's a bit of saxophone, some guitar twanging and some deep, choppy notes from Flower's vocals.
5. "A Dustland Fairytale" 9/10
The third single released from the album, with a slower pace to begin led by some jewellery-box piano. Picking up into a rock anthem with thunderous drums by the second chorus, and receding back to the piano to finish, this song has remarkable dynamics. This song really is a fairytale, with lyrics of hero and villain, and some beautiful imagery. Almost a 10/10.
6. "This Is Your Life" 7/10
This song is defined by the Lion King African tribe style backing vocals, and I feel it is at its best when it lets these come to the fore. This song brings real earth to the album. The solidity of the connection between the vocals and the lyrics about the complexities of life and living it well is, in my mind, uncertain, but I am always happy to interpret mysterious lyrics.
7. "I Can't Stay" 7/10
Another more funky track, with some good latin sounding chick-chicking percussion, a solid bass line and even some steel drums well implemented. Good vocals, I like it.
8. "Neon Tiger" 5/10
A weaker track, heavier, I feel this is a regression to some of their more dirge-like filler tracks. The tension building bridge and sexy final notes from Flowers brings it up from a 4 to a 5, but only half marks for this
9. "The World We Live In" 8/10
An impassioned song, with more good dynamics and crescendos gathered with trumpets, strings and drums. Whisper-like sounds and ghostly backing vocals add depth to the song without overlcouding the overall upbeat, positive message.
10. "Goodnight, Travel Well" 2/10
A long track, and my least favourite. If this song was a shape, it would be flat, low and black. There is a deep and sinister brass section in the background, which reminds me of funerals and the black monster in Fantasia. It's melancholy tone is not helped by the echoing lyrics "There's nothing I can say, nothing I can do now". Not so good.
11. "A Crippling Blow" Bonus track 8/10
Glad that this bonus track picks up the rear on the UK/Ireland edition of the album, it is characterised by Eastern European sounding stamping piano chords and crunchy guitar notes. A good mix of instruments in this song, with laser-like synths, a mixture of raw vocals and echoes, and some bouncy honky-tonk which aspires to sound like Greensleeves. Flower's vocals drag a little in this last track, but overall a good song.
Consistently good vocals; intelligent, fantastical lyrics; a cleverly used menagerie of instruments and sounds; and the usual excellent dynamics make this an amazing album. The Killers are the best artist I have ever seen live, and the singles from this album were some of my favourite of their performances. 8/10
As I type this review I am listening to Day and Age all over again; something that I do often!
To understand how I feel about this album requires a little bit of history from me; I bought Hot Fuss when I was 13 and I hated it. Listened to it once, went "Uh, what the?!" and didn't pick it up again until I was 15. 2 years on and obviously my music tastes had matured a bit and I realised what a diamond I had missed out on! From there on it I was hooked onto The Killers. Admitedly, I haven't managed to get my hands on Sams Town yet, but Sawdust and Day and Age were bought as soon as I could get hold of them.

Starting at the top, Spaceman is probably one of my 'favourite' songs on this album. I say 'favourite' purely because I can't think of a song that I don't enjoy listening to! Spaceman has a nice, disco-y beat to it and a catchy tune. The lyrics and subsequently video for it are a bit weird but hey - we're talking The Killers here, not classical opera.
A Dustland Fairytale is the song I'm most likely to listen to, I love the lyrics and the tune is beautiful. Simple song, but so nicely written and it conjures up some wonderful imagery. It also contains some of my favourite lyrics ever - "Change came in disguise of revelation and set his soul on fire" and "Castles in the sky sit stranded, vandalised. The draw bridge is closing..."
I Can't Stay is probably one of the weaker songs on the album, but not the worst. The style of this song is very different to the previous two, with less generated sounds and more focus on Brandons voice, which has improved vastly since Hot Fuss was released!
Neon Tiger is a marmite song I've found, most people either love it or hate it. I personally really enjoy this song when I need a little chill out, it's so easy to just drown in the lyrics and sounds.
Goodnight, Travel Well follows on with the slightly melancholic theme of this album, and has been used by Unicef to make a video to raise awareness of sex trafficking. It's a powerful song and well deserving of praise.
The World We Live In is very similar to Neon Tiger in sounds and probably the weakest song on the album IMO. It feels a little too repetitive to me and I personally don't like the chorus.
Joy Ride and Human make a great contrast to The World We Live In and Goodnight, Travel Well being more upbeat tracks. Joy Ride has a slightly 80s sound and Human can get a little grating at times. I thought, listening to the album it seemed a bit of an odd choice for the first release from Day and Age, as although it has a good hook, it isn't as strong as say, A Dustland Fairytale. It is however a good clubbing song, which is what The Killers seem to do best - even if it isn't their proper style!
A Crippling Blow is another 'like, like, like!' of mine, with it's strong beat and racy chorus. It does go a little synthetic in places but the melody is simple and catchy.
Losing Touch is a fab little tune, nothing too much to say about it apart from I really like it, and the lyrics are very catchy! One thing that The Killers seem to excel at is writing songs that really connect with the audience - I think at some point we have all lost touch a little bit!
This Is Your Life is the final track on the album, and a fitting end I think to what is on the whole a fantastic 50 minutes of music. It ties up the ends of the album beautifully and we see a return to the easier, relaxed but quite bittersweet style The Killers are known for.
I tend to recommend this album to people as something to listen to and just relax to, and I have yet to find someone who's said that they didn't like at least three songs on it. My only criticism of this album is it can sound a little bit 'samey' in places, for instance between A Crippling Blow and The World We Live In. The sound is very similar to Hot Fuss but the songs - and indeed, Brandons voice - have grown up quite significantly and whilst Hot Fuss is my favourite album of all time, it does seem to lack the maturity and sensitivity of Day and Age.
The Killers have now brought out some real quality albums but I believe there is none with as much quality as this particular offering.
Day & Age is a fantastic selection of music ranging from the slower and more melodic 'The World We Live In' to the upbeat and toe-tapping 'Human' to the funky sounds of 'Joyride'. There is music there for every palate.
The first song 'Losing Touch' has more of a rock feel to it than most of the other songs on the album. It takes you back to previous Killers albums before you then ascend to the new sound in the mesmerising track that is 'Human'. There is hardly a party anywhere now where the DJ doesn't play this at some point in the night. It's a great track and will live long in the memory for generations to come.
Other notable tracks include 'Joyride' which is a rather funky take on the Killers traditional brand. It is really catchy and is followed by the anthem 'A Dustland Fairytale'. From start to finish this song is awesome. Brandon Flowers really takes his voice to the limit on this track and, despite its slow start, the song bursts into life and eventually comes to a crashing crescendo at the end.
Arguable my favourite track on the album is 'I Can't Stay'. It contains a really clever use of bongo drums throughout the track and there is a little piece at the end where you actually wish the track would go on a little longer so you can hear the drumbeat for a few more seconds. Imagine wanting to hear more bongo drums at the end of a Killers song?? But it really is fantastic.
Those are the star attractions on the album and I would recommend it to anyone.
Day and Age, the latest album by the rock band, the Killers, was released on 24th November 2008 amongst a wave of hype of expectation and hope. Brandon Flowers, the bands frontman, declared that it is "the bands most playful album".
The reason for the slightly bizaare cover to the album is that it is suppoed to be a continuation from the preceeding 'Sam's Town', with Brandon declaring that listening to this album should be like "viewing Sam's Town from Mars!"

The album did stunningly well, selling over 200,000 copies in its first week of release in Britain alone.
To date, it is believed that the album has now sold over 2.6m copies worldwide.
I have always loved the Killers, and been to see them live on two occasions; but i have to say, that this album was very very impressive. It is one of those that you can put on and just keep listening too, i really could not find a track which i could not bare to listen too; something of a surprise in today's music industry.
My favourite track upon release was Human, however, i believe this was just because that was the chart single as, in recent times, I have most enjoyed listening to 'A Dustland Fairytale' and 'Spaceman'.
However, that is not to say that the rest of the album is poor, because it just is not. Every track, ranging from 'Losing Touch', through to 'Goodnight Travel Well', is definately worth a listen.
I cannot recommend this album further, another great installment from a wonderful band. I hope they can keep on producing magic like this in the future.
If you have seen the video for 'Human' then you know instantly that the killers have still maintained their glitziness and possibly now gone too far in the realms of commercialism! Brandon Flowers actually said about the release of the album 'Day and Age' that it is like looking down at sams town from mars, which is a pretty apt description I think.
Although I would have said that it is like looking down at a landfill site from the moon. I am not a fan of Human and its inane lyrics, 'are we human or are we dancer' nobody has deciphered the meaning of this maybe because there is none and there are some other weak tunes on here that have tried to relive the 80's synthfluence but failed miserably. I used to like the killers and they have created some brilliant songs in the past but this album for me induces fits of cringeworthy embarrasment as I feel sympathy for the band who could have been so much more. The only thing the killers are killing with this album is their credibility.

I just love The Killers! They get better and better! Hot Fuzz was a great album where it seemed every song counted. The more you listened, the more you got from it. Sam's Town was a little disappointing for me. It had some great songs but some just seemed to fill the gaps. Day and Age is a return to the great standard of Hot Fuzz. However, it's a bit different. It's more mature, deep, rich. They aren't afraid to experiment and be a bit weird. You'll know some of the songs like Human (how could you avoid hearing it!), but others like Dustland Fairytale might be new to you. Dustland Fairytale is worth listening closely to and thinking about. Joy Ride is really fun and sort of sounds like a joke! On Hot Fuzz, there was that song Everything Will Be Alright that was just the most depressing song ever, and there's an equivalent on Day and Age too. So if you're the weepy type you'll probably enjoy that!
I just can't stop listening to this album now and getting to know every song!
Having purchased this album on its release amongst many critics disinctly avergage reviews, I was intially very sceptical but nevertheless excited by the Killers 4th Studio album release.
Unlike many, this album was an instant hit with me. Comparisons cannot be made with Hot Fuss nor Sam's Town, both two total contrasts themselves, this is more mellow, more subtle and musically very different.
There are so many highlights on the album it is hard to pick flaws, track 4 "Joyride" is a grower and sounds nothing like anything previous, whilst Track 10 "Goodnight travel well", although very sentimental, is painfully depressing.
My favourite tracks from the album include "The world that we live in", "This is your life", "Can't Stay" and "Dustland Fairytale" all of which I have not stopped listening too since its release almost 1 year ago!
Having seen the band play live 4 times (two of which since this release) I can honestly say that these tracks stand up strongly amongst the 4 hot fuss and Sam's Town releases, with "Spaceman" proving an absolute rip-roarer of a crowd pleaser!
"Day and Age" is the third studio album by pop-rock band, The Killers. Released last November, the CD has hit number one in the UK, Canada and the US and contains various hits such as "Human" and "Spaceman". Although very successful, it can be argued to have differed from their previous albums, which include their bestseller "Sam's Town", as the americans take on a more poppy sound with a bit of electro: evident in their first number one from the album Human. I did, however, enjoy the record, with my favourites being "Joy Ride" and "I Can't Stay" amongst the ten songs on there.
Arguably, not their best, but Day and Age reminds us of the undying talent of Brandon Flowers (lead vocalist) and his three bandmates. It still has the recognizable indie-rock guitar sounds, cool drum beats and catchy, unique lyrics but have modernised with the helping hand of techno artists.
On first listen to "Day and Age" I was dissapointed. Having loved their first two multi-million selling albums, lead of single "Human" and with one of the most enigmatic frontmen in music, all looked to be pointing to a classic album.
As I listened though, it seemed lamer than a horse with four stumps. A mess of cheesy brass and sub-par songs that paled in resembalance to their synth or guitar anthem past. However, this is the sound of a band finding their own feet, and it really grows on you.
As many have pointed out, "Hot Fuss" was The Killers doing New Order and "Sam's Town" was a set of Springsteen-esc songs. It seems that "Day and Age" is the Killers finding their own set of sounds, via some "Lets Dance" era Bowie.
It's a melting pot of styles: the powerful "Losing Touch" complete with epic solo, the sweeping synths of "Human", the funk of "Joy Ride" and the Red Indian sounding choir of "This Is Your Life". Its a multi-faced album, perfect for an album from a band originating from Las Vegas, surely the biggest melting pot in the world.
The songs really stand out from each other, but each reveals itself to be a cunning pop song with which The Killers have made a living from.
The album furthers The Killers and really shows a bit of ambition, while not forgetting the tunes.
The Killers newest album "Day & Age" is as good if not better than prvious releases by the Las Vegas four piece. I bought The Killers first studio album "Hot Fuss" and i thought that it was the best album out at the time, but as more and more music has been released similar to this band i felt that they would get lost in the shuffle, but i was wrong, "Day & Age" makes the band step out of the shadows again and claim the crown for best sing a long festival tunes once again. What i also like about this album is that if you have never heard this band before you will soon be picking up all the lyrics and singing your heart out, especially to the likes of the great songs "Human" and "Spaceman". If you dont want to pay full price for this CD then it is currently on offer at HMV where i bought my copy for only £5, bargain if ever saw one.
