Advantages: Three or Four Decent Tracks

Disadvantages: Second Half of the Album is a Little Dull

The Killers are a band who I haven't fully made my mind up about; I enjoyed their first studio album - 2004's 'Hot Fuss', which featured a selection of well crafted and technically competent tracks, yet their subsequent offerings 'Sam's Town', and 'Sawdust' (which contained mostly B-sides) left much to be desired. Then there's the band themselves - four guys who seem to take themselves way too seriously and come across as very arrogant when i've seen them being interviewed. So actually, I wasn't too bothered about the Killer's latest release 'Day and Age' - but how does it sound?.

'Losing Touch' is a suitable opening featuring strong vocals and Eurythmics style harmonies, although it's actually a little slow paced for my liking. Next up is 'Human', a track which has had its fair share of radio play over the last few months - the song is incredibly easy listening - perhaps not one for the purists, but certainly catchy. From there on in, it's a bit of a mixed bag in terms of quality, however, there are some select gems to enjoy.

'Spaceman' is probably my second favourite track on Day & Age, as it is fast paced and features some cool synth - very 80's in style. My favourite song on the album however, is 'Neon Tiger' due to its powerful chorus and choice lyrics.

'A Dustland Fairytale' wouldn't have seemed out of place on Hot Fuss, and utilises the Killers well structured rhythms and interesting chords.

Other tracks of note include 'Crippling Blow', featuring some industrial bass, and 'This is Your Life' which, although sounding a little rushed, has an interesting feel and is a vehicle for the Killers trademark military style drumming.

All in all, Day And Age marks a return to form for the Killers, and whilst not recreating the anthemic highs of Hot Fuss, it is certainly a respectable effort. That said, the second half of the album is certainly not as good as the first, and there are three or four forgettable songs. Nevertheless, the album (which can be purchased from Amazon for £7.98) is still worth a listen.

"My global position systems are vocally addressed, they say the Nile used to run from East to West".
