Raw and powerful mythologically-themed black metal

Blood of Kingu is a one man black metal project by Ukranian musician Roman Saenko, also of other prominent Ukraininan black metal bands Astrofaes, Hate Forest and Drudkh. Kingu was a god in Babylonian mythology, who was killed by the god Marduk and whose blood was used to create mankind. Blood of Kingu then is a band themed around Ancient Sumerian/Egyptian/Indo-European history and mysticism, and effectively blends the harsh, raw droning high-speed black metal of Hate Forest with the more sorrowful and melodic riffs of Drudkh.

Like Hate Forest's releases 'De Occulta Philosophica' has a dissonant and ominous feel to it, with its clanging/clattering cymbal-heavy drums, furious buzzing riffs and changes in tempo from fast-paced passages to majestic-sounding half-time sections creating a very powerful and ancient-feeling atmosphere that is in keeping with the band's themes of the dark and mysterious civilisations of antiquity and ancient creation myths. The cover and booklet are full of deep-blue images of the cosmos and ancient line-drawings of Egyptian and Babylonian warriors in battle, and are in keeping with the gravitas of the music.

It does just sound like Hate Forest by another name upon the first listen, but repeated listens reveal 'De Occulata Philosphia' to be a subtly different beast, as Hate Forest becomes fused with Drudkh's unique style of reedy and fuzzy Eastern European melodic riffing. Roman Saenko's rasping growls are nowhere to be found, being replaced instead by droning druidic chanting, whilst interludes of tribal african rhythms and distant, booming horns further bolster the albums thick atmosphere. At under half an hour the album is quite short, but shows promise of good things ahead which is especially pleasing given that Hate Forest are now sadly no more.

De Occulta Philosophia is a powerful and intriguing piece of cold and raging raw black metal that is well worth checking out for fans of Hate Forest and Drudkh looking for something that is in the same vein but subtly different.
