Advantages: all new tracks this album
Disadvantages: two of them are theatricals
Unlike the first three Lordi albums, this one took a few listens before I took to the songs.
Like the other albums, this one kicks off with a theatrical trailer.
On the negative side, one mid album track sounds like one of these trailers and consists mainly of french oratory and sound effects. I've taken to skipping that particular track.
Positives are that unlike earlier albums, this one has all new songs and the music on this album is typically excellent. I think that the bands "Kiss" influence shows through more on these tracks than earlier offerings but the bands obsession with monsters continues as strongly as ever.
As always, there is a mix of out and out rock anthems and Scorpions like ballads. Where its possible to hear the lyrics through the gravel like tones of Mr Lordi on vocals, there emerges the characteristic humour of an artists who does not take themselves too seriously. "Go beserke, Miss Piggy style, Kermies legs are gonna fry" is typical while plays on words are commonplace, not bad for Finns.
Having given the album a few listens, its become a favourit with me. So often bands find it hard to deliver a quality fourth studio album, on the whole Lordi have avoided that problem and have developed their sound without abandoning that which makes them unique, nor will this alienate their fan base. Dont overlook them as a gimmick act, musically they are outstanding even if they have nicked the phantom of the opera as a sample!
If you like Lordi you will almost certainly enjoy this album. I expect a few of these tracks will become favourits in the vein of "devil is a loser" and "Whos your daddy". I can hardly wait to see which of these feature in the Deadache tour.
Summary: Lordi fans wont be dissapointed as the band show no signs of tiring
