The album opens up, with a dark introduction, the likes of which hasn't been heard from Metallica in ages; and as the album continues to unfold, I hear the heaviest , fastest and most inspired riffs, shredding, and all out thrashing since the Black Album and prior. I think James's voice has actually improved over time. His range has improved, and he seems to have more of a "character" rather than just trying to sound vaguely threatening. The lyrics are somewhat clumsy, not scanning well and with repetition of words taking the place of rhymes in some places. Hetfield's vocals are clear, which makes the lyrical weakenss somewhat more prominent than with other ... Read the complete review

It's been six years since Metallica's last studio album, have they returned to old form? Metallica frequently create 'heated discussions' within communities regarding their different albums. It has been suggested that they departed from their roots and toned down their song for the more mainstream audience. I'll make no secret of saying that I did not enjoy their previous album St. Anger at all. It's a good thing that they've made a great return with Death Magnetic. I listened to the first few teaser songs with baited breath, wondering if the Metallica I new would come back, and lo and behold, they're back!. James Hetfields ... Read the complete review

I very rarely make money on music reviews on review sites such as this... this is because when I finally get round to writing a review, someone else has already done it! Unless, of course, I write a review on a less 'popular' band. So... knowing I will probably make about 8p on this review, here goes... Since Metallica's 'Black' album was released I felt that Metallica's music took a very steady downhill slide, with only a handful of highlights such as 'St Anger' - the song, not the album, and it looked like the days of 'Master of Puppets,' or my favourite 'Blackened' were gone forever, lost in time... a bit like teardrops in rain... The 'Black' album (1991) ... Read the complete review

If you have ever read my other metallica reviews then you know that I am a big metallica fan, but that I have been very disappointed with the last 3 albums, but with the latest album "Death Magnetic" they have redeemed themselves in my eyes. Going back to their roots this album sounds more like a mix between "...And justice for all" and the "Black" album (more like the "Black" album). It is much heavier and has a better sound than the last 3 albums. James voice has the sound of the black album while Kirks guitar solos are reminiscent of all the older albums. Occasionally i think I'm listening to solo's from "Kill ... Read the complete review
