Advantages: Metallica are BACK
Disadvantages: It took long enough
This album is the answer to the prayers of more Metallica fans than I think I would be capable of counting. For years countless Metallica fans, myself included, have dreamed of the days of Master of Puppets, Battery and Fight Fire with Fire and have slowly been loosing hope.
However on the 2nd of September 2008 a French retailer put up for sale, 10 days ahead of official release, the first copies of Death Magnetic and the fires of hope and passion were rekindled in us all, Metallica had returned. And of all things to bring around such a massive change it was that Bob Rock, after 15 years as Metallica's producer, parted ways with the band.
The album itself is taking us back to the old school Metallica with songs like "All Nightmare Long" and "My Apocalypse" giving us back the chest crushing drum beats and face melting solos of the old days it looks like Metallica are well on their way back to what they started out as, one of the giants of metal. However, never a band to do what is expected of them, they have not totally dropped the softer side of their music either. Songs like "Unforgiven III" and "The Day that Never Comes" will keep the fans of the more, shall I say relaxed Metallica, happy.
It is the culmination of much experimentation and taking the road less travelled for Metallica resulting in an album which I believe will be hailed as one of the greatest albums of the decade and possibly even the century.
Summary: 6 out of 5
