It’s near impossible to sum up The Pixies immense talent – but this album is probably the best way to do it! Death to the Pixies is a 17 track strong collection of some of their best songs. The Pixies were Frank Black (vocals & guitar), Joey Santiago (guitar), Kim Deal (bass & vocals), and David Lovering (drums). They were one of the greatest bands ever, combining classic guitar rock, with indie pop melodies and an unconventional song structure to create a pioneering sound. They released an EP and 4 albums between 1987 and 1991. Their music was possibly one of the biggest direct and indirect influences over the 1990’s indie rock ... Read the complete review

If you christen your son Charles Michael Kitridge Thompson IV and bring him up under the teachings of the Pentecostal church, then you have to expect he’ll have a few things to get off his chest, so it proved for Black Francis and his band the Pixies. The Pixies were undisputedly one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. They released a hail of lazy evil over indie rock leading to inspire one man, Kurt Cobain in particular, to pick up the guitar and play it. While everybody else was playing the material typical of the time The Pixies came along, saw the scene, swallowed it up and vomited it out, thus was the sound of The Pixies. Guitars strung with ... Regarded by many as the most important band in the 80s, and a definite influence on Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain said that on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" he was trying to rip off the Pixies. It was obvious enough to anyone - and given away in the very first few notes, but it was good of Kurt to admit it. The choice of tracks for this "Best of" is perhaps a little odd, but all the really essential things are on it. Probably any fan will be the same, taking issue with the tracks chosen. Personally I think "Tony's theme", "Head on" and "Motorway to Rockwell" should be there, but there you go. This selection has ... Read the complete review

A couple of weeks ago, an old (well, 40 is in terms of today’s youthful indie scene), fat man was being interviewed on the radio, hinting that his old, defunct band might reform for a tour and, more importantly, a new record. So what? Well, this was no ordinary man… this, ladies and gentlemen, was Frank Black, a genius songwriter of the highest order and he was talking about one of the most important bands to ever grace this planet, The Pixies. In today’s derelict music scene where the indie/rock scene is expanding so quickly that it’s starting to become really boring, where now rock band and NOT pop groups are seeming to be ... I am not an old school Pixies fan. I first borrowed this CD off a friend last year having noticed that magazines such as NME continuously referred to the band as 'the most influencial..'. I was also going through a Nirvana phase and read that Teen Spirit was supposed to be a rip off of The Pixies. I don't normally like songs the first time I hear them but as soon as I played Debaser I left it on repeat for the next week. It was, and still is, the best and most perfect song i have ever heard. Tracks like Wave of Mutillation eased me into their harsh, yet orderly and in a different way catchy music. I soon realised that every song on this record, whilst all ... Read the complete review
