Advantages: Great vocals, excellent anthems
Disadvantages: Lyrics are pretty corny
Released in 1994 for me this was the only Oasis album in which they were anywhere near as good as they think they are.
Many people say Oasis are a Beatles tribute band and while a lot of their later stuff does borrow heavily, this has a much darker Manchester sound and is what they do best. It is a fantastic debut, brash, melodic and exciting, I don't like Oasis and don't think they've come near to bettering this but give them credit this is one of the great albums of the 90's and there are some fantastic songs on it.
The album is really all about Liam Gallagher's snarling vocals and Noel Gallaghers melodies and song writing, Rock 'N' Roll Star is an anthem full of lifting guitars and Liams droll vocal it really is a brash self confident classic of a song.
Shakermaker is a great tune full of heart and excitement, Live Forever is melodic and anthemic. Up in the Sky and Columbia are fairly bland and showcase the music Oasis would be making for the next 10 years, Supersonic is fantastic, a really soaring vocal filled with anger and brash idolism. Cigarettes and Alcohol is my favourite ever Oasis song, it seemed to sum them up so well, the lyrics aren't groundbreaking but its a storming tune filled with an anthemic attitude. Digsy's Dinner, Slide Away and Married with Children are all decent songs, although not a patch on the various classics this album offers up.
The album brought Oasis to the public attention, the songs are packed with attitude, they are lyrically shallow but the tunes stand out and Liam Gallagher has never sounded better, like a young sneering Mancunian Jagger he fills the songs with his personality and they suit him, later records relied on silly lyrics which didn't suit the singer, this is made for him and while its an Oasis record it really is the Liam Gallagher show.
This is what Oasis do best, brash cocky anthems, they should leave the more complex tunes to better bands, they are a stadium rock band and this album should be the one they are best remembered for, a call to arms for a generation of music lovers.
The album is available on I-tunes and is a bargain £1.95 for the CD on Amazon.
Summary: A classic Album from one of my least favourite bands
