Way back in 1990, Florida death metal band Amon changed their name to Deicide and unleashed upon the world a re-recording of their second demo, 'Sacraficial' as the first release under their new moniker. 'Deicide' is a crude, stripped-down slab of anti-Christian old school death metal, full of simplistic, chugging riffs, uncomplicated drum patterns, hellish, booming growls and rasping screams. The production is quite bassy and raw, but this goes well with the catchy, mid-to-fast-paced riffs and simple, repetitive grooves upon which the album relies. Deicide are inarguably one of the more significant American death metal bands, even if their material doesn't hold up to the legacy. This 1990 debut album is an impressively fierce outburst of the band's exclusively anti-Christian ideology, conveyed through scratchy guitars, pummelling drums and demonically growled vocals. Glen Benton's vocals are perhaps the highlight, sounding suitably evil thanks to the studio trickery of over-dubbing, particularly enjoyable in the frantic chorus of 'Dead By Dawn.'
