The melodic death metal direction is quite a surprise, but still sounds excellent even if it's essentially a Dark Tranquillity rip-off. Tristessa's guitar squeals into life at the opening of 'Mutter' and rarely lets up throughout the album, taking on a more traditional black metal roar against Ice's thunderous drums when the music turns more aggressive. With their fifth album, Astarte move away from their traditional black metal sound to embrace a more commercially viable melodic death metal style of equal credibility, still retaining their black metal base in a number of songs but placing a greater emphasis on Tristessa's melodic lead guitars opposite her husky rasp. Although it would be a better world if these things didn't draw attention to themselves through scarcity, it has to be noted that Astarte is an all-female band, a rarity in extreme metal indeed, and their reputation with their musical community has evidently afforded the Greek girls a higher production job as well as the opportunity for an impressive host ...

Brilliant start to the album 
Falls away towards the end Distinctive sound, mixing classical and folk influences with a modern touch. Songs can be grouped into several styles, without much variation within. More appealing to the casual listener. Overlong, dull and lacking the excitement now power metal has been abandoned. Reasonable ska punk with a highly commercial approach that's mostly successful. Inconsistent and stylistically confused. Good sound quality, and choice of material. Not enough songs to fall back on at this early stage.Old Times - Azuth
A promising start to another solo project. And it's free. Low quality production, and relies too greatly on its influences.

Greater variety than the studio albums, with a few more punk offerings. Remixes only make bad songs worse.
Tales Of Creation - Candlemass
Successful experiments alongside the trusted familiar style. Messiah Marcolin's increasingly elaborate performance threatens to collapse the universe.
A Clarion Call - Asunder
Excellent doom metal taking the best elements from the genre, pushing towards a distinctive flavour. Too slow and dark for some.
Symphonies Of Sickness - Carcass
Greater musical skill, more satisfying songs. May disappoint grindcore purists.
