Hell's Ditch - Pogues

Premium Review What does Shane know? (597 words)

Rating:

Shane Macgowan, leas singer and usually songwriter of The Pogues , said this was "a real dog of an album" in his (semi)autobiogrpahy. i regret that i must actively disagree with him. Forgive me for suggesting that at least some of Shane's dislike of this album is due to the high creative input of other band members. it is true that in this, the 5th, as well as in the 4th pogues album, the democratic spirit had emerged and with that, their trademarked brand of irish punk-rock folk had become watered down with rock n roll. but an album this great can not be written off just because it is not typical of their work. it still contains some truly fantastic songs ...

THE BEST OF The Pogues RELEASED: 1991 Accordion/Piano - James Fearnley Citern/Vocals - Terry Woods Guitar/Vocals - Philip Chevron Tin Whistle/Vocals - Spider Stacey Banjo/Saxophone - Jem Finer Drums/Vocals - Andrew Ranken Lead Vocals/Guitar - Shane MacGowan Bass/Vocals - Darryl Hunt ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Back in the mid 1980s when I first saw The Pogues on Top Of The Pops, I pretty much wrote them off, very unfairly biasing myself away from them, as I allowed Shane MacGowan s appearance to have a negative influence on me. Apart from Fairy Tale Of New York (which we all are so very familiar with), I heard nothing at all of The Pogues - I for some reason ...

Pogues song, it still makes me cry. In fact I have just halted this review to listen again. Lyrically a masterpiece, a genius of story telling, musically very reserved for The Pogues . Vocally reserved for Shane too: I took shelter from a shower, and I stepped into your arms, On a rainy night in Soho, the wind was whistling all it s charms, I sang you all my sorrows, you told me all your joys, Fantastic saxophone backing and solo too. 8. Fiesta Rowdy, bringing together the Spanish and Irish tradition, fun, but not the greatest. 9. Rain Street To me this is a filler, never liked this. 10. Misty Morning Albert Bridge Melancholy again, quite an interesting ...

Some of the best songs ever written by anyone. Falls some way short of "Ultimate".

Folk - Irish Folk - 2008

Excellent songwrting, strong performances, studio recording captures the "feel" of the songs "Cannonball" seems to pale to insignifance alongside some of the other tracks

Folk - Irish Folk - 2005

Folk - Irish Folk - 1996

When you say nothing at all and life is a rollercoaster - classics. Some songs not as good as others - words for example
