... Violenza Domestica A Patton-special; with piano, Portuguese rantings, 'aaaaaahing', 'cha-chaing' and yet more whistling. Really quite likeable... 8/10 6. After School Special Another esoteric song - again, likeable. The end section is just creepy though. 7.5/10 7. Phlegmatics The only song here, other than the manic drumming and weird horns which could be accused of being "bland". No... nowhere near Bon Jovi-bland. Just bland compared to the rest of the album. 6/10 8. Ma Meeshka Mow Skwo...more

Premium Review Disco Volante - Mr. Bungle: TERRIFYING, in a very wholesome way. (385 words)

1. Everyone I Went to High School With Is Dead Demented, slothful, death metal football chant. 8/10 2. Chemical Marriage Doesn't do much for me - silly organs, whistling, and random junk noises at the end. Sounds somewhat like The Avalanches in parts. 6/10 3. Carry Stress In the Jaw This is one of the highlights of Disco Volante - Patton crooning (and not-so-crooning (such a cliché to mention Patton's crooning, but it cannot be helped...)), deranged jazz, and the guitar riff in this is awesome! "Secret Song" is kinda funny, with Trevor Dunn (bassist) doing his best Abe Simpson impression 9.5/10 4. Desert Search For ...

Mr. Bungle, the supergroup of avant garde (or one of them--see Patton's Fantomas for further reference), is back with the erratic Disco Volante. This album, to my understanding, has not been met quite with the same listener satisfaction as Mr. Bungle's previous, self-titled Warner Bros. debut. To me though, the album is astounding, shattering the mess of the first album and filling a role in my collection that was previously unknown. Mr. Bungle mix it all up: jazz, punk, ska, techno, classical, you name it, and they shake that concoction until it's ready to blow. Whenever you think you know where a track is going, what genre line it is leading you ...

Premium Review Disco Volante - Mr. Bungle: The Difficult Second Album (1769 words)

A lot of people yak on about a bands “difficult second album” but I don’t think Disco Volante was quite what they had in mind when they said that. See Mr. Bungle have created an album that’s difficult for the listener (One of the most difficult I own, though Fantômas - Book1 beats it by quite a way), quite how the band found it to make I don’t know. Disco Volante takes the established Mr Bungle formula of messed up scary circus ska found on the eponymously titled first album and bats it out the window with a deft touch from a badminton racket. Also gone is the previous albums co-producer and manic saxophone warrior, John Zorn. Bizarrely ...
