Advantages: loads of hits
Disadvantages: 1 weaker song
If you're looking for a place to start with the Pet Shop Boys and want to discover some of their best tracks, then this could well be it. A hist compilation which takes their earlier works and will allow you a glimpse into some of the biggest singles.
Who are they:
Neil Tennant sings, Chris Lowe plays the keyboards. They write and produce most of their own material.
On this album:
'West End Girls' started it off for the guys, a homage to the west end boys and girls of London. Tennant's vocals sound fresh and youthful and the song is somewhat of a landmark. 'Opportunties' is a ballsy song, with snapy lyrics about the the fame game. 'Suburbia' has grim lyrics and an intriguing melody, I never really understood it, but it is atmospheric and haunting.
Highlights:
'Its A Sin' is anthemic, epic and amazing. It starts boldy with a countdown before exploding into a rousing pop song, which builds to an almight climax. The orchestral parts of this track sound superb. Another highlight is 'Heart' with the racy discobeat, it is the kind of track which would have you heading straight for the dancefloor. Of the newer tracks check out 'Being Boring' which is the boys poking fun at themselves, a slower track but carried off with style and wit.
Weak songs:
I never rated 'DJ Culture' with the robotic vocals, it seemed they were trying to be too trendy for their own good. It just did not sound like the et Shop Boys by that point. The rest of the album is very strong though
Verdict: Absolutely necessary for fans of eighties pop. This is a superb album of intelligent lyrics and discodriven madness.
Summary: stunning
