Advantages: A couple of incredibly strong tracks are present on this album.
Disadvantages: For the most part the music is extremely average here.
Goldfinger has been active as a band now since 1994. I first heard the music of this band back in 1999 through playing the Playstation game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater; I was not at all disappointed and this did in fact lead me to buying the bands 'Hang-Ups' album shortly after. In February 2005 the band released its fifth studio album in the form of 'Disconnection Notice', a twelve track offering of pop punk which is put across quite well by the band. This is by no means the best album that Goldfinger has ever released as a band; it is however an album that contains a number of interesting and energetic songs that are always good fun to listen to.
This 'Disconnection Notice' album begins strongly with 'My Everything', a powerful punk rock song which really gets the ball rolling. This is an incredibly powerful track, always I love listening to this one and never does the music of Goldfinger disappoint here. This is an incredible opening track for the album, it can be seen however that it is in fact all downhill from here. Throughout the rest of this album never does the music quite live up to this incredible start and after this fantastic opening track everything that follows is always a bit of a disappointment. This is not a bad album; the eleven tracks that follow 'My Everything' however just aren't ever as good. 'My Everything' has an incredibly powerful chorus, a driving guitar riff throughout, and the vocal style of the bands front man John Feldmann is absolutely incredible here. Everything about this track comes together perfectly and this 'My Everything' track therefore provides the highlight of the album in my opinion.
As well as 'My Everything', 'I Want' is another strong track from this album. Again the guitars are particularly powerful here and the vocals are extremely well put across. This is a terrific track which provides for two minutes of strong entertainment. The music is fun and energetic, a great track has been created by Goldfinger here and I for one absolutely love it. 'Too Many Nights' is another track from this album that is quite strong, this is by no means the best track that Goldfinger has ever recorded as band; it's certainly one that's well worth listening to however. Once more the use of guitars is terrific here, the vocals certainly do not disappoint and the drum beats also are well put across. The drum beats are simple and yet extremely effective, something that is true of the drum work throughout the entirety of this album in fact.
'Behind the Mask' here has an upbeat ska punk energy, it's not a particularly powerful track but the music created here is definitely more than adequate. Not a hugely exciting track but well pulled off nonetheless, 'Behind the Mask' contains a female spoken skit in the middle promoting animal rights. The bands vocalist is a vegan and active supporter of animal rights, the music therefore does on occasion put forth messages of this nature. The way the band puts forward ideas about animal rights in the music is I feel a definite plus point of the music of Goldfinger, the band is seeking to make a difference through the music and this is something that is absolutely excellent to hear.
'Wasted' is in my opinion one of the weakest tracks from this album, the lyrics are atrocious here and the music isn't particularly effective either. The track was composed by Benji Madden of Good Charlotte fame and Goldfinger singer John Feldmann also; a good job has definitely not been done here and the track is distinctly disappointing in my opinion. This song is extremely tiresome, the lyrics are juvenile and listening to this track therefore does not provide for much excitement or entertainment at all.
'Disconnection Notice' is not a bad album as such; it's just not a particularly good one either. A lot of the tracks contained on this album are just completely average and lack the wow factor required to make the music stand out or to remain for long in the memory. Goldfinger's 'Hang-Ups' album is a superior release by far, if you've not before heard the music of Goldfinger then I'd most certainly recommend investing in 'Hang-Ups' but probably not 'Disconnection Notice'. I'd definitely recommend listening to 'My Everything', 'Too Many Nights' and 'I Want' from this album, it's best to ignore much of the rest of this release however so downloading solely these three tracks is probably your best option here. When this album began with 'My Everything' I was expecting a lot more here, 'My Everything' is without doubt one of the best songs that Goldfinger has ever written as a band and yet most of the rest of the album is entirely average. It was disappointing to hear the level of excellence drop off immediately, it was however to be expected as had the band continued this album at such a high level of expertise then this would have been an extremely exceptional album indeed. The music of Goldfinger is on occasion quite fun and extremely well put together here, definitely listen to the 'Hang-Ups' album first and foremost though.
Summary: 'Disconnection Notice' is not an album I'd recommend buying, the music is for the most part mediocre
