Advantages: 60 songs
Disadvantages: dated in parts
A rather bold three disc compilation, collecting some of the best known and loved songs from the the Disney films. The films appeal to all ages and it can be argued that Disney is a staple part of most children's diets when they are being introduced to movies. There are 60 songs on here, so I have highlighted some which mean something to me.
It begins with the wonderful 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' by Elton John. The song is so powerful and moving and it is capable of bringing a tear to the eye. John has never sounded so emotional and committed and he really does the song justice with a superb vocal full of raw emotion.
'A Whole New World' is pretty good, thanks to a soulful turn from Peabo Bryson, who lifts the quality of the track. On the subject of soul, 'Colours of The Wind' by Vanessa Williams is a delight. Her vocal is poised delicately yet manages to carve out such sincerity from the lyrics.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, 'The Bear Necessities' by Phil Harris & Bruce Reitherman is a gem. Comedic and insightful, the song is playful with the melody and reminds you how fun the 'Jungle Book' film actually is. On the subject of fun, 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' is sung to a tee by a prim and proper Julie Andrews. Her grasp and precision of the words is superb and it is an amusing little ditty.
Elton John returns to do another track, 'Circle Of Life' is another fine emotional outpouring, all anthemic and worldy. Less successful is the A Teens doing a song from Lilo and Stitch, which sounds overtly cheesy. I do like 'Cruella De Vil' by Dr John, which is one to play when you have that wicked aunt or mother in law around!
Some real classics are included in the form of 'The Beautiful Briney Sea by David Tomlinson & Angela Lansbury. Both turn in robust vocals and add a certain quaint charm to the song. While 'The Aristocats' by Maurice Chevalier delights with an air of sophistication and swagger.
This is a fine collection, with most bases covered, also helped by some lovely cover artwork.
