Advantages: Great rock music, unique voice
Disadvantages: none if you like rock music
Rush, who are a Canadian rock band, started out in the 1970s and were influenced by the heavy metal sound. They were often compared to Led Zeppelin. The hard rock sound remained thorughout their earlier albums, but Rush have also found a new identity and sound. Still passionate, but with, I think, more intelligence. Rush gradually introduced new instruments such as keyboards and even African and Indian percussion instruments, as they wanted to explore different sounds. They did this without losing their intensity. Yes, Rush have definetely changed, but I don't think for the better or worse. They wanted to change their style of music and that to me shows what intelligent musicians they are. I used to love their old stuff and rushed home from school at the age of 15 to listen to my brother's albums. After a break of about 10 years of not listening to them, I was surprised to hear they were still making albums. After buying and thoroughly enjoying an album they did in the 1980s, I was pleasantly surprised. Geddy's voice still does it for me and is still unique. He doesn't quite reach the high notes which were part of the earlier Rush, but I was glad, as it could get a bit too much and turn into screeching. Their old material concentrated more, I think, on longer concept pieces and gradually became more concise. They are more philosophical with their lyrics and write about issues that concern them such as society and values. Their standards have not waived, both lyrics and music. Each album is very different, so you shouldn't reject them after listening to just 1 album. Also listen to an album more than once. It is so easy to disregard them and say what a load of rubbish just because it's not what you expect. I saw them in concert in Sheffield around 7 years' ago and they performed both old and new material. I loved it all. I think the majority of their fans remain loyal and suppor
t them and expect them to progress and change. I think they are one of the world's few bands that progress in their experimentation and structure and sound on every album.
