The hushed ambience of "Zoo Pie" (old-school GbV, but whispered) leads into "Things That I Will Keep", an achingly beautiful melody that frames Pollard's voice at its best. Track 4, "Hold on Hope", is probably the highlight of the album - although Bob himself apparently hates its obviousness. Hugely overlooked major label debut from Dayton, Ohio's indie-rock lo-fi juggernaut that was Guided by Voices (and more specifically Robert Pollard), "Do the Collapse" was released on TVT in the United States in 1999 (and was also briefly released on UK indie label Creation just prior to its collapse - appropriately enough). Controversially produced by Ric Ocasek, lead vocalist with the Cars (who also produced pop albums for No Doubt, Weezer, and - er - Suicide), this was GbV's attempt at a FM radio-friendly album.
