Moloko are perhaps best remembered for the Ibiza anthems 'Sing It Back' and 'The Time Is Now', both of which were huge chart hits in 1999 / 2000. However, Roisin Murphy and Mark Brydon's debut album is altogether a more different sound and style. Influenced by a whole range of eclectic sources, its title is derived from the chat-up line that Murphy used on Brydon on their first meeting at a house party. The band themselves are named after a drink that was served at the milk bar in the cultiest of cult films, 'A Clockwork Orange'. The album seems to be full of in-jokes and spontaneous thought, and is almost an obscure comedy script as much ... Read the complete review

There is silliness in this world: There is absurdity, childishness and hare-brainedness - and luckily, Moloko subscribed to all of these matters in their first album (1995), "Do you like my tight sweater?" Yes, I do, actually, but it does itch rather under the armpits. Moloko are an energizing little duo (Roisin Murphy and Mark Brydon), who have consequently made a few more feet prance in time to their jovial popski tunettes via their albums "I am not a Doctor" and, most top of the pops-ly, "Things to make and do". Although I kinda know that there has been a mainstreaming attitude in the last album, I don't believe that ... Read the complete review

As good as this album is, I'm not going to descend to the dull and predictable level of saying 'now that they're famous they've sold out to popularity'. This is simply not true of Moloko. I would say, however, that whether or not you like Moloko's recent material, this album is worth listening to anyway for its' originality, imaginative approach, and sense of fun. Moloko's debut album is unashamedly off the wall and frequently nonsensical, without being pretentious. Even better, the bizarre lyrics compliment the funky trip-hop beats and a few cracking tracks are to be found. The first track and only single (which charted abysmally), 'Fun For Me' embodies all of ... Read the complete review

Back in 1996 Moloko were something different. back then they were alternative, something fresh, now they're the embodyment of commercialism. But back '96 they were really good. they sung about nothing inpiticular at all. It was about the music. I've heard it described as ambient drum 'n' bass, but thats not fair. I think alternative dance. It is a mad, crazy fest of big beats, bizzare sounds, and weird lyrics! the album takes its name from a 30 second piece. Its just Rochene(?) saying the line a couple of times over with a couple of sound effects. To compare it to anything is difficult. I haven't got anything auite like it in ... Read the complete review

When i first bought this CD, i loved it...i was, at the time, really into the trip-hop/techno/folk thing, and i thought it was an incredibly clever CD. i still like it, don't get me wrong, but the songs get really tiresome after awhile...the rhyming on "Fun for Me" wears on your nerves, and "Party Weirdo" seems like a waste of time...I've found that it's only really "useful" for parties and the like...it's a little too shallow for everyday use. pick it up used, if you can. ...
