Nothing has really advanced here from the previous E.P., and the major deviations from the band's established sound all fit squarely into existing sub-genres pioneered by other bands, granting these Brummies an undeserved reputation as the future of black metal that was almost believable on their earlier releases. Anaal Nathrakh's second album is something of a disappointment, though in truth it's no less accomplished than their previous efforts; I just expected a lot more. After the relentless brutality and devastation of the apocalyptic 'The Codex Necro,' these songs sound comparatively tame and even dull, owing more to death metal than the band's usual brand of industrial black metal. Even the addition of clean vocal touches is nothing new, having debuted on the previous E.P. 'When Fire Rains Down From the Sky...' and ends up sounding like Borknagar anyway, but perhaps most disappointing of all is that this entire album can be listened to without having to retire to bed with a ...
