Advantages: Indie Brit Rock at its best
Disadvantages: Not much fun if you dont like Oasis
Oasis have been standing at the pinnacle of English ‘rock’ music for the majority of my duration at the very least, and quite rightly so, coming out with classics such as ‘Definitely Maybe’ which was a stunner of an album, it is no wonder that they are one of the most successful English bands ever.
This newish offering is also worth mentioning in the same group of Oasis classics; it is fair to say that the Gallagher brothers have made their money and are now only still in the industry for the love of the money. I have heard them on stations saying this album actually mattered to them, and they are very happy with how it turned out, and to be honest, if you sit down and listen to it you might just have to agree.
1. Turn up the Sun
Straight from the out set you are listening to a track which is quite blatantly Oasis from the vocals, but it is more the Oasis of old, and not quite what you would normally hear on the radio. A very basic drum beat and uncomplicated guitar makes this a nice entrance into the album. What is nice about this track is just when you think it has got repetitive, it goes into a long outro, and in a strange way it leads you into the whole album.
2. Mucky Fingers
I don’t want to throw this word around wily nilly, but there is a resemblance to the intro to this song and some of the Beatles work, in fact you could be forgiven for not thinking this was Oasis at all, with a melodic drum beat it almost drowns out the vocals. I think this is one of the weaker tracks on the album, but due to the strength of the whole offering I think that can be taken a compliment.
3. Lyla
The first track to be released on the album, which unsurprisingly went straight to Number 1, in fact there are already two number ones on this album. I believe if you could dissect this track then it would come up 100% roaring Oasis, it really is everything you expect from the Manchester band, and I think that can only be a good thing.
I have to admit when I first heard this track on the radio I was thinking they had perhaps let themselves down, and that once again they hadn’t matched the brilliance of ‘Definitely Maybe’, however, as time as passed I have found myself singing along to this, and bopping my head along to it when it is on the radio, top offering!!
4. Love Like a Bomb
This starts out with an opening beat, and it could almost be Wet Wet Wet, however then those familiar vocals come in, and you can breath easy again! Not that there is anything wrong with Wet Wet Wet I’d quickly like to say. A nice gentle track it makes a nice interlude between what will be the two most played tracks on the album. This is about as beautiful as Oasis are going to get, with a bit of piano, and Noel giving it a bit of ‘la la la’ I think even sceptics could get used to this kind of track.
5. The Importance of Being Idle
By a country mile my favourite track on the album, I think it is intelligent, funny, and all together a great, no superb, track!
Now that I have got my biased opinion out of the way… this is the second number one on the album, and it is probably the track that has the best vocals on it, not the usual Oasis growl in it. It has strong verses, strong choruses that will have you singing along in no time at all. If your not a fan of Oasis, give this a listen, I think it could really sway you.
6. The Meaning of Soul
A very quick track, 1.44 in fact, its fast, it’s a nice break up from the previous tracks, and wakes you up, it almost says, you have heard half of the album now, but don’t think your falling asleep, your damn well gonna listen to all of this!!
7. God Thinks I’m Abel
A slow entrance, gives you a chance to breath after the last track, a lot of my friends have classed this as one of their favourite Oasis tracks ever, it’s slow moving and really quite good. With a track like this you can tell Gem Archer, the new guitarist is having more of a say, as it’s clear the Oasis style has certainly changed.
8. Part of the Queue
If you were gonna sit down, discuss how good the likes of Indie Rock and Roll bands such as Ian Brown and the likes were, this track alone makes you need to enter Oasis, my second favourite track on the album this is what Indie music rock and roll should sound like. It’s boppy so you wanna sway your arms around, you wan’t to know the words straight away, you want to dance! A quicker track, but a real great, if you had to go off and download one track of the album to listen to, download this one! It’s a stunner!!
9. Keep The Dream Alive
Nice guitar entrance, more of a pop tune, something you would expect to hear on the radio, the guitar could be anyone from McFly to Texas, however, you cannot write something off just because it is perhaps a little bit more commercial, the words certainly don’t give the idea this is a commercial song, and as I said at the start Noel and Liam said that the whole album meant an awful lot to them, and they were very proud. It has a good chorus and is very listenable.
10. A Bell will Ring
Back to the Indie roots once again, can you tell I’m quite the Indie fan? A good guitar intro thrown into a blender, added in with some good vocals, mixed for twenty seconds or so, then add a second guitar and some drums, and you are well and truly away. One of those tracks you could quite happily sit down and relax to, just to bop your head along to.
11. Let there be Love
A superb choice of song to end the album on, it’s slow, it has some good singing, and seems to reach out to you, one of those songs that actually makes you want to put the album on repeat and listen to the whole thing again. Imagine you are watching a play, and you have a lead character singing out the play, all on their own, this would be the song that they would sing.
I think this album is the second best offering Oasis have ever released behind ‘Definitely Maybe’, and if you are the Oasis fan, you will know that is quite the accolade! I wrote at the top that if you are one of these people who downloads a track before they buy the album just to make sure I would make that track then ‘Part of The Queue’ should be the one, if your going to stay away from the radio tracks anyway. Top marks from me!
Summary: A great new British offering!
