Whenever most English speaking people hear the name Shakira, they automatically picture the blonde haired girl who was prancing around with horses in the video for "Whenver, Wherever". A lot of people, however, forget or simply don't realise that Shakira has been popular all over Latin America for years and has had 3 major albums prior to her English debut, "Laundry Service". "¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?" (or 'Where Are The Thieves?') is Shakira's second big album which was released in 1998 after the unpredictable success of "Pies Descalzos" two years before. In this time, Shakira's vocals have further matured to produce a ... Read the complete review

Shakira Isabel Mebarak's second album Donde Estan Los Ladrones? was released in 1998 after the massive success of her debut album Pies Descalzos. Although this in itself was a runaway success, its presence is still widely unknown in the western world. I came across this album by a close friend of mine. He had bought her Laundry Service and had become fasinated with her and began to find out more about her. Doing this he soon came across her Spanish works, with Donde Estan Los Ladrones? being the first he found. This is by far Shakira's best work. Her first and most recent album's "Pies Descalzos" (Bare Feet) and "Laundry Service" are good, but nothing compared to this. There are many different elements in this album such as Latin pop, rock, dance, ballad and even Arabic! The album is totally sung in Colombian Spanish, which makes the album even stronger- Shakira's vocals are much deeper and more powerful in Spanish, which gives each song an authentic, sweet touch. Here is the tracklisting: Ciega Soromuda (Blind Deaf And Dumb) Si Te Vas (If You Go) Moscas En La Casa (flies In The House) No Creo (I Don't ... Read the complete review

Yes, I do realize that you were expecting a review on "Laundry Service", but there is nowhere else to put this review. To say the least "Donde Estan Los Ladrones" is a fantastic album, which must be one of the best latin / rock albums of 1998-1999. It was never released in Britain, this was because it consists of 100% Spanish lyrics. Don't worry though, the songs are so beautiful you won't need to understand a word! "Donde.." apparently sold something like 8 million copies worldwide, being hugely successful in the Latin Music market. It also won the hearts of all the critics, and I've not seen one bad ...
