Advantages: entertaining, varies from song to song, a break from the rest
Disadvantages: none
GUANO = the droppings of sea birds or a synthetic product of similar composition. APES = Well I think we all know that one This is a German band that sings in English. It has four members who are all male (Stephan Ude, Dennis Poschwatta and Henning Rumenapp) apart from Sandra Nasic who is the vocalist. They have so far made two albums, ‘Proud Like a God’ and ‘Don’t Give Me Names’. 1: Innocent Greed (3:49) The quick flash of drums and heavy guitar welcome you to the album. The distant cry of Sandra’s voice echoes like an instrument and then the lyrics start. When the chorus starts Sandra is both backing and main voice making a hollow echo sound. The song itself is about a tragic love affair. She finds that she is empty and so is her lover. They are both greedy maybe they are greedy of each other and she cant help but need him even if he is no good for her. 2: No Speech (3:29) This was the first song I heard by the band after one of my friends told me about them. It was the second single released off the album. It is about trying to escape from something, maybe from an intense relationship or as an animal in captivity. The song itself opens with the very gentle sound of the guitar, which reminds me of children’s toys and fairgrounds. The heavy guitar then goes over the magically music and the song starts. Sandra’s voice varies in the voice from singing to a very quiet whisper then a shout. This makes the song an exciting range of styles. 3: Big In Japan (2:49) This is the only song on the album that the band did not write them selves. It was the first song released as a single off the album. It opens with a very catchy guitar riff that starts to get you dancing. When the vocals start the instruments calm down but as soon as the chorus starts the catchy beats over power you again. Lyrically it is about a person falling in love with a rock sta
r. (On my version of the album I have the video of this song. It only appears on special addition albums however). 4: Money & Milk (2:39) The song opens with the guitar going budda budada on and on. It then goes higher and the song starts. The song itself is about perfection. You can never prefect anything, however hard you try. Even if we lived in a perfect world things would have to go wrong, it’s fate. 5: Living In a Lie (4:33) This is where the title of the album comes from. It is the first slow song on the album and shows Sandra’s weak side as she expresses her pain in a very soft voice. It is about the end of a relationship. Her lover leaves her but always comes back and her relationship is really just a lie. Even though it is a slow song the slow soft guitar and light drums still manage to get your hips gently moving. 6: Dodel Up (3:38) The chorus of this song is shouted while the verse is sung. It has a very jumpy beat, which is good for dancing, although there are some softer parts of the song that are less danceable. The song is about the start of a relationship when you are not sure how each other feel and are uncomfortable saying things. 7: I Want It (3:19) The song opens with a police siren over the fast guitar and drums. The song is about control. That who ever has it has what they want and people obey it. They can be good like an angel or abuse what they have and turn you into slaves. 8: Heaven (4:59) The song has a very painful beginning before the instruments blend. It has a very plain and quiet chorus. The song is about war. About blood staining the green grass blood red. Soldiers come home from war proud to of killed other people and it is approved that they have taken someone else’s life when it really legalised war. 9: Mine All Mine (3:49) The chorus opens with the quick run of an acoustic guitar, which reminded me of Spanish music before the electric
guitar overpowers it. The fast beat of the song remains the same all through the song. Lyrically it is about power and how people are scared of those who have it. If you do what people want you to do you are basically a zombie. Don’t fall into that trap. 10: Too Close To Leave (3:33) This is another soft song although it does have some loud bits. It is about a relationship that is hard to break from. 11: Grogan (2:48) This song opens with a scratch noise before some music (that sounds like my old game boy music) starts. The music progresses and the rest of the band do backing vocals. It is one of the heaviest songs on the album full of shouting. It is about bullying. How she resists arguing back and ignores me but in the end she has enough. It’s the last straw and she has her revenge. 12: Anne Claire (5.35) This is the only song on the album I don’t like. Why don’t I like the song. Well its all about someone who is about to die which I don’t find a very pleasant subject. The music as well is very creepy and it’s just a terrible end to such a brilliant album. The great thing about this album is that there are no fillers, each song sounds different and it has meaning. I would like to close this opinion by saying if you visit the official web site they are at the moment giving away cd samples of this album. I ordered one and I have received it so its well worth a look, if your still not sure if you want to invest your money. The address is www.guanoapes.co.uk ENJOY
