Tutu - Miles Davis

Premium Review Jazz innovator reaches impasse, maybe the technology was not ... (230 words)
by GKDurkin - written on 22/03/08 (Useful, 33 readings)
Rating:

It stands to reason that no other jazz performer has had such an impact on the evolution of jazz as trumpeter Miles Davis . Armstrong may have invented the improvising idea, Ellington been the champion of composition and Charlie Parker may have coined the language of jazz but Miles immeasurably influenced the music in his various discernible periods of work. The 1986 album Tutu is a move on from the orchestral 50 s, the 60 s of the quintet and the fusion of the 70 s to the machine-funk area of the 80 s, a period of mixed fortunes for artist and listener alike. The casual browser and Miles fan may be drawn to the bold cover and the reflection of the times in track names ...

not only in Miles Davis´ career, but also in the history of music. So what came out? Well, easy listening this ain't and I certainly wouldn't reccomemd this as an introduction to Jazz or to Miles Davis (Kind of Blue does very nicely for both of those - you might as well start with the best!). The first disc consists of 2 side length tracks, "Pharoah's Dance" and "Bitches Brew", both over 20 minutes. They're both wild cocktails of smoky improvizational jazz. Pharoah's Dance is famous for having no less than 19 edits within it, some as short as 1 second long, and really marks the start of using the studio and the editing booth as an instrument in its own right. I actually can't ...

Swings like crazy No, sorry, can't think of any

Some excellent covers, a decent track list, brings some more variety to a neglected genre Some covers are well below par

Awesome talent, Vibrant enthusiasm, Too many more to mention Not in English

Bold ideas in here, captures the era it was recorded in. Does not escape the 'better in theory than put into action' badge.

Fantastic artist revamping a tonne of classics and throwing in a few originals. A few too many covers and no lyrics in the insert
