Doo-Wops and Hooligans is an album that I have had on my iPod for what seems like forever and I have played it to absolute death! I love every song on it and it's one of the best albums that has been released in the past few years in my opinion. This is Bruno Mars' debut album and it has got twelve full length songs on it. Bruno is a 28 year old singer song writer who grew up in Hawaii and now lives in America. He's signed to Atlantic records and he's now a worldwide star, and has won several music awards. This album was released back in late 2010 but it doesn't seem old or outdated, and I don't think I'll ever get bored of it to be honest. I paid around £10 for the album when I bought it and it is currently retailing at just £4.50 on Amazon - a real bargain price in my opinion. It is available on cd format or digital format and I have a digital copy which was purchased from iTunes. The album contains many of Bruno's well known singles which were all over the radio a few years back and I think that most people will recognise the songs on the album, especially his very well known ones such as The Lazy Song, Just The Way You Are and Grenade. All of the songs on the album are suitable for people of any age - my Mum is such a fan that I bought her her own copy! My little one is also a fan of several of the songs on the album - he's not even two yet but knows some of the lyrics to the lazy song and will try to sing along. The sound of the songs is very varied and no two songs sound the same, each song has a fresh feeling to it and there is plenty of variety with a nice mix of R&B, pop and rock pop songs. There's also a reggae song on here which features Damian Marley, and there is something for everyone. There are no explicit songs on the album and no graphic lyrics, which I think is very refreshing given that Bruno Mars is quite a young guy and I think that this really sets Bruno apart from many other artists who are pop/R&B singers, and makes him unique. He is very talented and his songs are original and meaningful, so there is no need for swear words to make them entertaining. It makes it even better that he has written them all himself and it makes the songs feel that bit more special and he lets the listener learn about his life such as his experiences with love etc and his songs seem real and from the heart. The songs do not come across as forced and he isn't afraid to show his softer side and his voice is very soothing and gentle in most of his songs even though he has a powerful voice, his range is really impressive. Some of the songs could easily come across as 'poor little me, I'm so heartbroken' but his vocal range and the music used in the songs makes them very easy to sing along to and none of the songs are depressing, even though there is a lot of talk of love, pain and sorrow. Some of his songs do make me feel sorry for him but not in a pitying way, more in an understanding way. As I have said I love all of the songs on the album but I do have a few favourites. One of my favourite songs on the album which I am playing right now as I write this review is Grenade. I love the catchiness of it but also the lyrics make a lot of sense to me and I can relate. The song is about giving everything to someone and loving them unconditionally but them not loving you back or appreciating anything. The chorus is really powerful and the song is very catchy. The lyrics aren't the most uplifting but the music used stops it from being dark or depressing. All of the songs are really catchy though and very easy to sing along it, and there's no songs on here that I dislike or skip when they come on. All in all this is absolutely flawless album, I can't recommend it enough and I give it five out of five stars.
I bought this album as I loved the single "Just The Way You Are" and I had watched a few live performances of his. I was impressed. The album does contain the single "Just The Way You Are" which is a loved up ballad that focuses on Bruno telling his girlfriend that he think she's beautiful just the way she is. This song is my favourite song on the album. It's a ballad that's done properly without sounding cheesy and I never tire of hearing it. It's a really slick song which I would describe as Pop/ RnB and the vocals are just as beautiful as the song itself. Bruno is an excellent vocalist and that comes across on the whole album, not just on this amazing song. Another favourite song of mine on the album is "Grenade" which is more of an upbeat number, but it still has the "Bruno" feel about it and this was a HUGE single for Bruno. The singles are perhaps the standout tracks for me on the album, although the album is amazing throughout and VERY well produced. I would compare it to the likes of Lemar and The Lighthouse Family, sort of "loved up RnB with the slick factor". I would recommend this album. Every track is different, so no two songs sound the same. It's a really modern album and very "today", although I doubt that it'd ever sound dated as it's far too well done for that. An enjoyable listen.
I got this album as a Christmas present and I love it! I have to say i am no music buff and I often hear songs on the radio and have to ask 'who is that?' I love his voice and I love the variety of songs on this track that all seem to get you somewhere in your middle. Just the way you are - This song is a good one to sing along to in your car or around the house as it has a good tune and a feel good factor. But at the end when the music peeters out and its just him singing it was thought provoking and made me feel that i wanted someone to love me that way and also reminded me that i loved someone that way. Very expressive. Lazy song - not sure I should be singing this on the way to work in the morning but I do! I nice sing-a-long song to make you smile! And so true of some days as well. Marry you - Also one of my favourites for its singability factor! It makes me feel spontaneous as well, throw a bit of caution to the wind, do something mad and out of character. Creates a smile at least, even if marriage makes me run, I don't think marriage is the message. Its to do something spontaneous and live in the moment. Talking to the moon - there are two versions on this album, the original and the acoustic version. Both are very poignant and thought provoking. In summary, there are many different styles of music on this album and they all show a side to Bruno Mars and an ability to adapt his voice and tone accordingly. It can make you feel many different emotions and i think the ability to do that is a proper talent in music. He is a very talented young man and this is an album that testifys to that. I hope we hear much more from him and i for one will be collecting his music along the way.
Bruno Mars released this, his debut album in October 2010 and won his first Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in February 2011, having received six other nominations. In October 2011 he was again nominated for six Grammy awards including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Doo-wops and Hooligans and Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the song Grenade from this album. Unfortunately I was a bit behind the times and only got round to purchasing this album in November 2011 after the release of the fourth song as a single, despite liking every song he had released to date. Why it took me so long I have no idea as it is one of the best albums I have in my collection. Normally there are one or two songs on an album that do not appeal but I have to say I love every single one. I find it easy to listen to and great to sing a long to when driving, it really puts me in a happy mood. The album contains all the well known hits, Just The Way You Are, Grenade, I Think I'm Going To Marry You and The Lazy Song. The album is a mix of toe-tapping hits, soulful songs with great lyrics by a very talented singer song writer. It seems amazing how it took so long for him to be discovered as an artist. This is one album I will continue to play for many years and one that I would not hesitate to recommend to my friends and family. I look forward to hearing his future offerings and I am sure I will not wait so long to buy his next album when it is released.
Bruno Mars has to be one of the BEST artists to hit mainstream music over the past year or so! For those of you who are unfamiliar with who he is (however shocking that statement may be), a quick Bio... Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez (Bruno Mars is his stage name) on the 8th of October 1985 in Hololulu Hawaii. Although I find it difficult to believe that this performer who has been active since 2005 didn't achieve commercial recognition and success until 2009, before this time he was a relatively successful song writer writing for the likes of Alexandra Burke, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida. However the world was graced with the incredible singing voice and talent or Mr Mars in 2010 when he featured on B.O.B's Single 'Nothing on You' and Travie McCoys ' Billionaire' and realeasing his first debut single the extended play 'It's better if you don't understand' which featured Cee Lo Green and B.O.B these singles propelled Bruno to his mainstream success and led him to becoming a recognised solo artist releasing 'Just the way you are' on July 20th 2010. 'Just the way you are' did incredibly well reaching Number 1 in the UK single chart and Number 1 on the US Bill Board Top 100 and having recorded sales of over a million in October 2011. Bruno went on to release the album Doo Waps and Hooligans on October 4th 2010 and better the world for it! This album has an incredible sound, a sound that can be appreciated by absolutely anyone, whether 3 years old like my little one Harry who is in love with it and can sing every word (still can't make it through the alphabet though), or my Grandad who to my astonishment has it in his glove box "I like to listen to it on long journeys" he said, my point exactly! The album features a mixture of music, for the most part about love or loss, however even with those songs that are primarily focused on rejection or loss are not so much depressing unlike some music that is focused on these topics can be, instead it provokes a kind of relatable emotion and you somehow begin to empathise with Bruno, whether the songs are based on real scenarios or not! The album begins with 'Grenade' this would be one of the songs that is focused on rejection, Bruno sings about all the things he is willing to do for a girl, including catching a grenade and jumping in front of a train, the guy shows some devotion, and I can appreciate where he is coming from, as it is the same with me and the mrs (don't tell her that though, I can't lose the cool cockney bravado) sadly for Bruno though this girl doesn't share the same sentiment, not too good for Bruno's love life, or his health if he is going to go round catching grenades but brilliant for music lovers around the world as the final result is an incredible song, one which has earned countless awards, reached number one in countless countries and has gone platinum in quite a few countries! The album goes on with other incredible tunes by the Genius that is Bruno Mars, including The Lazy Song, Just the way you are (as earlier mentioned) and Marry You, now I don't know you, but I can safely assume that you have heard one of these songs at some time or another, and if you haven't you have to be living under a rock! I could go on forever talking about each of these songs individually as they are all absolutely phenomenal, but I honestly believe the only way to truly appreciate this album is to buy it and listen! The songs are all relatable, emotion provoking and easy listening, I think you can listen to this album no matter what your mood, if you are feeling sad its the perfect pick me up, if you are happy, its just really good easy listening! I often think about the music I listen to now... will my boys listen to it in years to come as I have done myself with music my parents listen to such as Queen or Elvis, and I honestly believe this is music that will stand the test of time and I will still be listening when I am in my 50's (i'm only 23 now). Bruno has been compared to Elvis relating to his appearance and stage presence and I am sure like the king him self, Bruno will go on to achieve incredible things and his music like the music of musical God himself Mr Presley will be around for many many years to come! Keep it up Bruno! I can't wait to see the next album! (Sources include Wikipedia, The Official Chart Company and US Bill Board)
