Advantages: Great melodies, occasionally dark, deep and heavy, sometimes light and cool. A perfect album.

Disadvantages: None. Well, maybe it'll take a while to get into.

My friends used to love the Pixies and listened to them constantly. I however hated them, I thought they were just whingy American teenage rockers trying to do heavy metal.... but then...... something happened..... suddenly whilst listening to Monkey Gone to Heaven (on this album) I realised I had been completely wrong all along. I must have been listening with the ears of a middle aged Status Quo fan and thus heard only irritating noise, now what I was hearing was beautiful catchy melodies sung in a weirdly other-worldly voice. Lyrics suggesting strange forms of sado masochism set to wildly varying guitar riffs, one minute sixties bounce, the next minute, grungy rock. I loved it. I always will.

This is the sonic equivalent of Elvis in a dress, sucking tequila through the exhaust pipe of a Harley, or something....

Ideal music for a dark and dingy alternative club, also ideal for shouting to whilst driving. The Pixies were an excellent band with both lyrical and musical depth that rewards you time after time. For me the problem was 'getting it' in the first place so if you don't like them at first, do yourself a favour and have another listen.
