Hill's vocal style is similar to that of Sam Cooke, a very soulful voice indeed and its a real shame that he dies a couple of years after making this album in 1984 of a heart attack. He never got to hear those artists who were so obviously indebted to his new blues sound. A very simple album this, but one that probably won't be very familiar with many people out there unless you're a massive 80's blues fan. ZZ Hill's blistering 1982 album 'Down Home Blues' was an album that managed to kickstart the genre as well as Hill's own flagging career. I had never heard the album before, but I was flicking through my Rough Guide to Blues book and thought I would give it a listen having a good liking to a blues song or two. If you like the later work of Buddy Guy or Robert Cray, then you are bound to like this album.
