In the late seventies and the early eighties, there was a unique melting pot of styles on the music scene. Punk had had its day but its influence was still evident in the "post punk" scene that was developing, bands such as New Model Army were still carrying that particular torch. For the commercial music followers New Romantic had broken out of the small London clubs were as a cult it had developed and had taken over the chart scene thanks to its imitators such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. After periods of being The Southern Death Cult and Death Cult the band finally decided to cut it short and become simply 'The Cult' - and this is their first album release Overall a good album, though rather patchy. The high points are the single releases - 'Spiritwalker' (the most danced to record in the club I went to in the 80's!), 'Resurrection Joe' and 'Go West'. Less strong are the slower tunes that expose Ian Astbury's limitations as a vocalist. Overall a good buy but you may find you play some of the songs far more than the others ...
