Advantages: outstanding compositions, unique and easily recognisable sound, arguably the best album since Analogue Bubblebath Vol3 (AFX)

Disadvantages: inaccessible, most people consider this 'just noise', at two CD's it's a little long

It is important to be aware that Aphex Twin's work is not accessible, nor is it designed to be. In order to fully appreciate any of Richard James' work there is a fair amount of listener participation required.

This album is not easy listening and is quite certainly not melodic in the traditional sense. It is, on the other hand, a fine example of the undeniable genius of a man who is master of all the 'machines' at his command.

Also known as AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window, Pritchard D Jams and Bradley Strider, James was one of the founders of the ultra-cool Rephlex label. His work has always been intricate and detailed - an obvious labour of love. In the field of electronica James sets the standards for others to follow.

Druqs is an album that encompasses elements of previous aliases whilst simultaneously striving ever forward. Of particular note on this album is the classical piece, 'Avril 14th', a touching and melodic retort to those who would question the artist's ability as a composer.

Be warned though, despite a very capable grasp of his art, the twin makes no effort to charm the listener and by his own admittance makes his music primarily for himself.

In summary, twisted, fractured, tinny, noisy,inspired, wonderful.
