Advantages: Great fast tunes, Dark evil ambient pads
Disadvantages: dodgy piano interludes, pretty sparse
was looking through some records in the 'other' genre and found aphex twin's (aka Richard D. James ) album "drukqs" on vinyl. Got home, got the headphones on and cracked up the volume. wow. The album is pretty sparse when it comes to proper tunes but when one comes on youll know all about it. The shear speed of the electric instruments and extreme distortion of vocal samples (almost to the point where they could be mistaken as part of the percussion) is great and shows the time and effort put into making these tunes by Richard D. james. The tunes are real headbangers and would probably tear your brain apart if listened to in a state of intoxication. :) The short tracks on the album are mostly piano interludes, pointless really unless you mix them in with a cool break beat or something, but the ambient tracks are really something else. I have never heard a track without any instruments that can really create such an evil dark and creepy mood. They can be up to 6 minutes long and just slowly progress from creepy ambient pads and work on until they are really bassy (almost sub) creating a really dark lurking mood. Great suff. I would really recommend buying this album if you are enjoying aphex twins 'experiments' with electro music up to this point, but as it is reletively similar to his other works you could probably find an album with some more consistency as "drukqs" has some great tunes but is mostly full of piano interludes and some dodgy samples for scratching. but dont miss the ambient stuff as he excels at this "mood creation". Harvey.
