 ... choruses. During O Stella which follows My Lover Polly Jean sings "I think I see her smiling" and in Hair she sings "He said 'wait'! Wait Delilah my babe". Actually she doesn't just sing it, she screams it majestically. Victory and Sheela-Na-Gig are the two defining moments on Dry in my humble opinion. Victory is built around a potent bass riff which is guaranteed to remain in your head for days. The album generally is very strong lyrically but Sheela-Na-Gig is particularly a good example of this...more

Premium Review Dry - PJ Harvey: PJ Harvey's debut album is mostly excellent. (482 words)

Rating:

Dry was PJ Harvey's debut album and was released in October 1992. It received some very positive reviews, especially from the NME who gave it 9 out of 10 and were very impressed by Polly Jean's "natural songwriting". Polly Jean wrote all the songs on Dry, except Happy And Bleeding, Dress and Plants And Rags which she co-wrote with Rob Ellis. The album was produced by Rob Ellis and PJ Harvey. Dry is essentially a rock album and Miss Harvey's band work very well together as a unit. PJ Harvey has often been compared to Patti Smith who I don't really know that much about. The opening song My Lover certainly sounds a little bit like Smith's ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A stunning first album and a taste of what was to come (1133 words)

~~~Still worth listening to 15 years on~~~ Recently, with the arrival of PJ Harvey’s eighth album, ‘White Chalk’ I revisited ‘Dry’, her first album, released in 1992. On its release, the album wowed the music press and was hailed as an astonishing debut worldwide. I remember, because I was 20 and living in France on my third year at uni, and the ripples touched even the uncool French music scene. I was so blown away by her, at a similar age to me she had produced an album that was not only great to listen to, but showed an intelligence and maturity beyond her years and promised so much more to come. ~~~The Artist~~~ PJ (Polly Jean) Harvey has been ...  Read the complete review
Premium Review Dry - PJ Harvey: Some REAL girl power (634 words)
by - written on 03/10/02 (Very useful, 193 readings)
Rating:
How to describe Polly Jean Harvey? A female Nick Cave? Bjork with guitars? You could compare her to Patti Smith, but she's less self-consciously literary; her music is more raw and immediate. Tom Waits shares her no-frills production values but his roots are in mellow west-coast rock: Polly's west coast would be Minehead or Weston super Mare. Sinead O'Connor has similar emotional honesty but her debut, equally stunning in its way, was lush by comparison. Face it, she's pretty well unique. Her three-piece eponymous band produces a growling, bass-heavy swamp rock, if such a thing is possible when you hail from Yeovil. The playing on this album is ...  Read the complete review
