Advantages: Some outstanding songs, typical Foo Fighters

Disadvantages: A few weak songs

Well have been a big fan of the Foo Fighters for many years. This is the kind of music I love and this band are one of the best rock outfits around. Have always felt there is something lacking on previous albums though. This album I think has that little something extra, it's a classic. So why do I love it so I hear you ask. Well obviously it's about the music, so here is what I think of the songs:

1. The pretender - First release off the album. A really big song. Loud fast, everything the Foo's stand for. A great start to the album as it set the tone perfectly. 9/10

2. Let it die - A really mellow start to this one. It's builds and builds through the song, until it finishes loud and powerful. 'In to deep and lost in time' great line. Awesome song. 9/10

3. Erase/Replace - Classic Foo Fighters sound. Sounds like some of there older stuff. This song does not quite do it for me though for some reason. 7/10

4. Long Road to Ruin - This song is a good one, but just a little to commercail for me. A nice song, but we don't really want 'nice' songs from this band! 7/10

5. Come Alive - Another slow start, takes a while to get going. But when it does has a real epic sound to it. Not quite as good as track 2 but still very powerful. 'You saved me the day you came alive'. Classic lyric. 8/10

6. Stranger things have happened - I love the metronome ticking in the background on this song. Really solid accoustic song, shows another side of the Foo's that I do really like. 8/10

7. Cheer up boys (your makeup is running) - After the last chill out song, the band seem to realise it's time to shift it up a gear. They do! This song explodes into life. A real pulsating riff plays through the song, makes your head buzz! Excellent. 9/10

8. Summer's End - One of the weaker songs. Again it's just to nice! Makes me think of running through a meadow in the summer. If I wanted that I'd put Jack Johnson on! 6/10

9. Ballad of the Beaconsfiled Miners - Brilliant accoustic instrumental. Have seen Dave Grohl do this live, his fingers were so quick. The story behind this is when some Australian miners (beaconsfield miners) were trapped in a mineshaft, whilst awaiting rescue they requested Foo Fighters music be played down to them. Something like that anyway. So the song is named after them. 8/10

10. Statues - Pretty average. Slow and boring, why do they put these songs on the album! 6/10

11. But, Honestly - Really good song, builds up again as many of there songs do. I love this song, reminds me of a song on Colour & the shape, song was called 'new way home'. Very similar, both awesome songs! 9/10

12. Home - Well I know I have complained about there 'slow boring songs' this is another slow one. But boring it is not. This is the most beautiful thing the band have ever done. Soft piano playing and beautiful words. 'Echos and silence, patcience and grace, all of these moments I'll never replace'. Makes the hairs on my neck stand to attention. All round wonderfulness! 10/10

Overall an excellent album. There are a few weak songs on there which is a real shame, if they took these out and replaced them with a few better ones, this would be rock history. Shame. But the inclusion of songs as good as Home still make this a magic album. Go get yourself a copy, and skip straight to track 12!!

Overall 9/10!

Summary: All round rock goodness, buy this!

Love 'The Pretender', apart from that, not really struck on this album.

They're an amazing band though I felt this album was lacking something compared to their others.... Great review :)
