      **Introduction**

Following on from my recent review of Lynyrd Skynyrd eighth studio album "Twenty" I have now decided to review their following album which was titled "Edge of Forever". The band has gone through huge changes in terms of the band line up over the years and most notably after the fatal plane crash in 1997. However the same line up which recorded the previous "Twenty" are all here for this album two years on apart from one change with Kenny Aronoff replacing Owen Hale on drums.

      **Edge of Forever**

This is the ninth studio album from Lynyrd Skynyrd and the fourth of the Johnny Van Zant era. Edge of Forever was released on 10th August 1999. Despite being one of the least known Lynyrd Skynyrd albums it still received decent reviews from music critics. This album features 12 tracks and here is my review of "Edge of Forever".

      **My View**

      Working for MCA

The album starts with this reworking of one of the best loved live tracks. This gets off to a fast paced Rock out feel with some great guitar riffs and Johnny Van Zant's strong vocals showing a different feel than his brother Ronnie who sadly died in the plane crash in 1977. This track gets us off to a very flowing start about working hard to support your family.

      Full Moon Night

When I received my copy of this album this was one of the tracks I would play a lot. It has a dark feel as you would expect from the subject which is about strange things happening on a full moon night and just a generally eerie feeling you get. This is one of the best tracks on the album and has a really great flow as well as some soaring guitars from Rossington and Medlocke.

      Preacher Man

This is a full on Rock Track which has a great sound. Once in full flow this is a really impressive track especially musically and when Gary Rossington plays a Slash like Solo on his Gibson Les Paul you are left in no doubt about this track's quality. This is a fantastic track that really needs to be heard. Great guitar work. The build up to the solo is absolutely brilliant.

      Mean Streets

This is another very flowing up tempo slice of Rock with Lynyrd Skynyrd's unique spin. I really think this track has some great melodies and the tempo changes brilliantly throughout the track for different parts. This track features some great piano work from Billy Powell alongside some soaring guitars from Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke.

      Tomorrow's Goodbye

This is a really emotional ballad about the world and the thing I like is that not once is there anything mentioned about "Global Warming" and it's more of a track about the Planet as a whole. This is a really brilliant track with some great orchestral backing and some great subtle guitar work. This track builds beautifully and is topped off by a great guitar solo. Lovely.

      Edge of Forever

After the slow paced ballad of the previous track we get back to the up tempo Southern Rock with this flowing slice of Lynyrd Skynyrd. This has a brilliant flow and Van Zant's strong Rock vocals shine throughout this one. This is another very good track with some great guitar work and some very catchy melodies all round. Good stuff.

      Gone Fishin

Yep this track is actually about fishing but also uses Fishing as a metaphor for falling for someone using the lyrics "Hook, line and sinker". This is another very flowing track which is unmistakably Lynyrd Skynyrd and has some great guitar work once the track builds in the middle. This is a very good track indeed.

      Through It All

This track has a great intro which features a catchy stop start guitar and drum sequence which then leads into the full flow. This is another very strong track with Johnny In fine voice and the guitars soaring to great heights yet again. Gary Rossington again proves himself to be one of the greatest guitarists. Great flowing stuff.

      Money Back Guarantee

This is a great Honky Tonk Blues Rock track, Billy Powell opens up on the piano and then the full musical performance starts. This is another track with a great flow and some great backing vocals from Carole Chase and Dale Krantz Rossington. This has a great slower part in the middle and then Billy Powell just lets loose with a fantastic piano solo.

      G.W.T.G.G

This is another very strong flowing track which has a great melody and is one of the more up tempo tracks on the album. It again features some great Piano work from Billy Powell. This stands for "Get it While The Gettings Good" which is a betting term which refers to getting in there while the chances are good. Great guitar work after the middle.

      Rough around the edges

This is a brilliant track which is the second ballad on the album, This track makes good use of the Piano from Billy Powell and builds superbly, From the opening moments you know that this track is building into something special and this comes to fruition when the great guitar work comes in you are just hooked on the playing. This is a superb track.

      FLA

This opens with a Bluesy slide guitar and then quickly moves into a fast paced Full on Rock track. As the track moves along at it's flowing pace you tap your feet to the melody and the backing vocals complete this track. This is a great track to end on and again shows the guitar work of Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke as well as the strong performances from all the other members.

      **Overall**

This is another very fine album indeed from Lynyrd Skynyrd, I am sure that even some Lynyrd Skynyrd fans will not have heard of this album but I would urge them to check it out as it's a great slice of Lynyrd Skynyrd and has some great songs on for new fans to get into. This is a very strong album with no real weak track and there are some really fine moments on the album. Another great record.
