Advantages: to the point, promising, really quite good
Disadvantages: songs could have been developed a bit more
Released in 1997, when at the drive in were a four piece band 'el gran orgo' is one of the most interesting things i have ever heard. Very distinct sounds, some not what you would quite expect from at the drive in this six track (seven if you count a little interlude in the middle, which is quite scary) masterpiece. Obviously this isnt as developed lyrically and as well produced as 'relationship of command' is, yet it is still a mindblowing set of songs. It also isn't as 'in your face' as rleationship of command, it is more subtley beautiful. First track 'give it a name' appears to be about a broken relationship, quite melodic yet it still contains the at the drive in trademark loud guitars and contrasting vocals. Possibly apt for anyone who has endured a break up with lyrics such as 'you don't know what you've got 'til its gone' and 'it's not you its me' both worn out cliches yet still everyone's heard them at one time or other, and they still work. 'Honest to a fault' is something which would sound more familiar to at the drive in fans, louder guitars and heavier vocals and distinct screaming all blend together to make this a great track. Track 3 'winter month novelty' is my favourite here, I have absolutely no idea what it is about, it has quite a schizophrenic pattern, starting with quite melodic guitars, building up to some heavier drums and then back to a gorgeous guitar riff and then building back up to some heavier vocals, guitars and a repetitive chorus, then back to square one again a few times. Really is a exquisite song. 'Fahrenheit' is back to the at the drive in you know and love, not quite as good as anything on relationship command, but that's not really making out that it is a bad song, it could just do with a bit of development lyrically i feel. But a good indication as to the brilliance at the drive in w
ere set to produce later. Track 6 and 7 'picket fence cartel' and 'speechless' are both quite heavy and i would love to hear them live at some point as they are both outstanding, especially 'speechless' and its screams and delicious bassline. To conclude this is something which every at the drive in fan should possess. f you've not come across at the drive in before really you should buy relationship of command first, see what you think of that, I'm sure you'll love it as i do and then buy this. I just can't wait to see the direction they take on their next album.
