Electra Heart - Marina and the Diamonds
Advantages: Amazing and consistent
Disadvantages: Don't Know
I think that this album is brilliant because it has everything I want in an album. I think it is a mesmerizing album full of colourful and captivating music. I really like the complex lyrics and the sharp tone in the vocals. Even past all the hype, I would say this album is a diamond and I say it is highly recommended.
The problem that I find with a lot of pop albums at the moment is that all the tracks seem to have the same beat, same theme and the same atmosphere. I would say this is because of an overuse of cliches, but if they were underused cliches, are they really cliches? It's layered in a lot of hype, but take the layer's off the music feels flat and dull. I'm glad to say Electra Heart dosen't have any of those qualities. As shown in the fun tracks such as Primmadonna Girl and Home Wreaker.
Some people have said that some of the songs sound simular to each other, but after listening to this album many times, I'm wondering if we're listening to the same album.
Marina and The Diamonds first came to my attention with her song Oh No from her first album. I liked her first album and I loved the personality and quirkiness she added to it because it made the album sound very intelligent and a joy to listen to. I think this album is just as good as her first and I think she's really developed as an artist on this album.
It's albums likes these that make me proud that I have a varied music taste. You never know what you're missing out on. Just when you think you've heard everything - you haven't! I think that a lot of people can relate to this album that you put your heart on your sleeve for.
"Electra Heart is the antithesis of everything that I stand for. And the point of introducing her and building a whole concept around her is that she stands for the corrupt side of American ideology, and basically that's the corruption of yourself. My worst fear--that's anyone's worst fear--is losing myself and becoming a vacuous person. And that happens a lot when you're very ambitious." -- a quote from Marina when she's talking about her album. This quote is from wikipedia, but I put it on this review because I thought it was very relevant because it explains what she wanted to intend and suggests that she was very personal with this album as well as considerate to others.
I really hope that this album becomes a pop classic. Because I think I've listened to this album a lot this year because I think the music is ironic and very heartfelt. I would say that this album is a mixed bag, it's quite different from the indie sound from The Family Jewels, but you can still tell it's Marina singing because she has very unique vocals and I don't know anyone else that sounds like her.
The album has a lot more electronic influences now, but I still think she stays true to herself in this album. Heaven forbid you to be bored from this album. My favourite track of the album is Teen Idle. It's very deep and I would say that it's depressing, but it's a very good song that a lot of people could relate to. The way the song has been produced is amazing and at a top class standard. Though don't be surprised if someone laughs if you sing the chorus because you accidentally said you wish you were a porn queen instead of prom queen.
Fear and Loathing is also an amazing ballad. Amazing synths and really sultry. It sounds very free and relaxing. It's a song that's really hard to describe because I don't think my words can justify how brilliant the song is. The ballads are really the highlights of this album for me.
The rest of the songs are also really fun and amazing. Anyway you can gather that I love this album and I think that it's worth listening to even if it's only for those two tracks.
Summary: Must get!
